As y'all know I've been looking for some new dirt while VMI has been away. I decided to just go for a drive to see what I could find (free styling as American Pickers would call it) I eventually rolled up on a plot of land that was nice and open with a little family garden in the middle. The gentleman that owned it was working the farm and I asked him if I could detect it. He gave me permission to dig it all and showed me his beginners detector that he hadn't used yet. Told him that I could help him get started and he tells me that he knows all the old folks in the area and could get us permission to their land as well. So I think this was a double score for me.

(going to write this one up a little different)

Coins= Wheats: 1941(x2) and 1919 IHP: 1907, 1891, 1888 Merc: 1941
.69 cal Three Ringer
925 Silver medallion
Weird button with a bunch of diff crests
4 Spoons and a Fork ( the most utensils I've ever dug at one time ) the one spoon reads "Navy Yard Cafeteria"
MY first Butt Plate. Not sure what it is off of, assuming mid 1800's musket
Victorian Ere Ice Chest latch/Handle/Lock (This one might be my favorite)
Bunch of harmonica reed pieces
2 pocket watch backs
4 19th century saddle buckles (i believe)
"National" suspender buckle
The Iron piece i'm not sure on, could use a little help
Little copper piece says "Proctor" on it, no idea what is off of
Part off of a turn of century purse
Not sure what circle plate thing is. Looks like P.A. (or F.A.) PERRTS or PERRYs. Trade Mark N.Y.

Thanks for reading and good luck out there.

Yup....awesome hunt!
The latch.....crazy good find!

The latch might have been my favorite find of them all! Thanks Dave.

Congrats on the freestyle hunt! Sure paid off in more ways than one, you've got a great place to hunt with a few on deck, made a new friend and got a big, fat stack of booty to play with...Ddf

Thanks man! Yeah I went back today and made an even better booty! Stay tuned.

Very nice assortment Stef,, I like hearing about people who take pride in sharing their stories and the permissions they can get you into. I would lend that guy one of my detectors and give him a few lessons.
Congratulations on all your finds. Take some pictures of your new old timer friend with a metal detector on your next joint hunt.

Thanks bud! I'm planning on helping him figure it out and i would bring another detector if i had one haha. I'm a one machine guy right now.

NIce going, Stef! I like your approach...should lead to more good things.

Thanks man! And it did lead to some really awesome finds today...i'll be posting tomorrow hopefully.

Nice digs Stef, happy to assist with the Victorian ice chest ID from 4000 miles away!

Always can count on VMI for an ID! Cant wait to post my stuff from today....still cleaning everything up.
