New One Dollar Coin

Thanks for the interesting articles, Jeff. I still think that the only reason that the $1 coin hasn't been a spectacular success yet is because the US government won't withdraw the $1 bill. If they did withdraw the $1 bill, and cash register manufacturers, vending machine operators, etc. made the necessary changes to service the $1 coin (and half dollar, for that matter), it would succeed. I didn't see anything about half dollars in the articles, but I would hardly say they are "widely circulated." Come on, federal government, take the initiative!
By the way, the two-tone motif metioned earlier for the $2 Canadian coin was also adopted for the 2 euro coins. Take a look at:

Canada had the foresight to discontinue their $1 bill when they introduced the $1 coin (Loonie). That pretty much forced the Canucks to used the $1 coin. We had two opportunities to do that here in the US and we failed both times. Americans are very reluctant to give up something they have used their entire life ($1 bill) for something new and unfamiliar ($1 coin).

The fact is it costs the Bureau of Engraving about 4? to produce a $1 bill that has a useful lifespan of 18 months while it costs the Mint 8? to produce a dollar coin that should circulate for at least 30 years. The BOE produces around 4 Billion $1 bills each year at a cost of about $160,000,000. .......

Boy Klaatu, I wish you would do a little research before spouting off! Kidding of course ;D!! Your responses have impressed me. Keep up the good work!

The insane thing is, not only do they plan to keep the $1 bill, but they will make 1/3 of the yearly total of $1 coins as Sacagaweas. Go figure.....

Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005 = Seigniorage
