I got out for a bit, but it wasn't nice, wind chill was about 4-5 below freezing, kinda took the fun out of it.

Got my oldest coin this week past so was quite stoked at another decently recognizable Gerorge II copper, and...to top it off I poped this out, I knew it was old from the weird edge, but didn't want to rub the silver so kept it with me dirty all afternoon, that's fun all in itself, keepin the mystery alive.

Now my oldest coin, and a silver at that.

End of story.

Glad to see you put it in your pocket without rubbing the dirt off! Congrats on a stellar find, Rick.

There's always something good to come when you keep hitting the areas the old stuff is found. You're only looking at maybe a $50 coin, but those are about as tough to dig in this part of the world as a $5,000 coin! You'll have a hard time beating that one for both age and condition.

Agreed, because they are tough over here. I find more Medieval hammered than this period, not even sure if I've ever had a Geo I Shilling (if so it can't be more than 1 or 2 in 20+ years) :headbang:

Even George I coppers don't turn up often around here. I might have 5 total that can be ID'ed. Plus a George I silver I would expect to be quite worn, but not that one. It's a good way to break into the old silver.

Whoa...I missed this post somehow. Surprised this one didn't make it up to the banner...this is a rare bird over here!

It's just one of those things that doesn't get appreciated enough because people have no way to know how many holes have been dug and that is the only one I've seen turn up. That said, it's not a rare coin so a banner find is still a hard one to call. The ones that constantly fall under the radar are the decent 2nd American buttons the boys post. That is crazy not one of them has made the banner, but that's because they aren't shiny and not enough people really understand what they are. When I started detecting the examples being posted were in the range of $1,000 buttons!

My thoughts exactly! They do make a nice avatar pic though. Patriot did manage another cruddy one in our first hunt this spring.

That was the sticking point for me, I know its a rare find but its not a rare coin, had it been in EF it would have tipped the balance & I would shouting banner :coffee2:
Still means the poster has something to aim for 8)

It's really strange how the rarity scale can be thrown out the window for what is underground because what's rare to dig might not be rare, and what's very rare, actually sometimes turns up. At least that is the case here, and very rare doesn't last for long if you start popping them.... which is what happened to the buttons like the 2nds.

Great looking coin :icon_thumleft: as outhers have said quite scarse here, never mind there :o Yours looks to have the large O to the date, which would grade it a little higher...ยฃ70-ยฃ95...good catch

Thanks SS. My book shows no varieties, and is quite out of date.

Thanks to everyone else too !
