Just wanted to pop in and say hello from a new member who is a new hobbyists in MD

I have to say, my enjoyment of coin collecting is what made me get my first Detector and I have only been out a few times with it, but
nothing strikes "goodies" ... I have found 7 cents, a pair of broken glasses, some heavy piece of steel (No clue what it could be), and a rock that stuck to my magnet. All this for 6 hours of work ..... not that I mind or have anything better to do with those hours, but I wanted to hear THE REAL
SIDE from the Tnet pros :notworthy: .... I have found soda/beer cans, tabs from cans, candy wrappers, coat hangers etc .... oe sthis just come with the territory? lol

Well Im gonna cut this short but even though I enjoy looking at the finds, please share your "blood sweat and tears, just to come up empty story" for my piece of mind :BangHead: lol and I am grateful and Acceptable to any and ALL (Serious) advice I can get.

As the old saying goes......."treasure is where you find it" You will go through these issues a lot MD. The key is getting the settings of your MD to suit you. You can select the options to only find certain metals but this means you may miss something though.
A prime example is the rock you have that stuck to your magnet......When it signaled on your MD was the settings on your device set to find all? Also what did it hit on? Iron? That magnetic rock could be something very very rare.....a meteorite...... I would definitely be worth finding out depending on the size and mineral make up it could be worth some significant money. Take some good pics of it and post it on Tnet ....there are several well knowledgeable people on here that can identify it. Good luck and welcome to the forum

Dean,

Welcome aboard.....quite frankly I think we're all a little bit nuts to play around in the dirt like we do....at least that's what
my wife keeps telling me....lol.

I've been at this crazy hobby for 20 years now and have lucked out with some decent finds years after year....the more time you put into it....the more successful you'll become....

I try to keep in mind it's a hobby first and foremost...the fresh air, exercise and the thrill of the chase are what it's all about....the finds are just a bonus.....actually I believe my best finds were the detecting friends I've made mostly in cyberspace...

Regards + HH

Sounds like you dug what the rest of us have, hang in there man,patients/persistence,it's already there, eventually something cool will surface! GodBless Chris

It sounds like you're doing as well as most of us. There are guys/gals that hit the beaches nearly everyday that do end up with many ounces or pounds of gold and silver. Those less dedicated or without enough time to spend everyday at the beach, parks etc. will do well with the "occassional" valuable find. I've been MD'ing for about 15 yrs and can only claim one valuable find. It happened to be a mans 14k ring with a 4ct saphire. Fair amount of clad, not much pre-64 coinage, and enough trash to construct a small mountain with. Since I've retired and am traveling around the country I get out more often...each time I do get out, the goal is the same...any US minted gold coin. If I ever reach that goal I'll probably be done. My heart will seize up....I only hope I'll last long enough to get my find posted (with photo) on TN. Until that happens, I'll continue to enjoy the exercise and outdoor fresh air that I make friends with each time I go out.

In early DEC I was detecting an old stageline road in South Carolina, tomorrow I'll be working the beach near San Diego. In Mar, it'll be a ghosttown in New Mexico. For the record, I got skunked on the stageline road, at least for this year. I found a small pocket spill of clad while working a shortcut back to my rv through a very dense forest. I've never hit on anything worthwhile beyond clad at the beaches, but now I try to get out when storms have created good cuts to work...since we've had no real storms here to speak of, tomorrow likely will end up just being another beach cleaning....but truth be known. If I found an $30k diamond encrusted Rolex....I'd consider it just a ho-hum find, not nearly as exciting (for me) as that gold coin. For that, I'd probably take out a full-page ad on here to announce the find.

Thanks everyone for the welcoming replies, Its such a relief to know im not the only one pulling bottle caps out of a 6 inch hole lol.

@Bman: As far as the tones and and all the fancy things the detectors do, mine is a "budget friendly" model from Harbor Freight. But from all the soda cans and bottle caps I have found I know it works. But Im Still trying to "tune" it. But for now it seems to "detect" everything no matter what setting its on.

I wish i had a beach nearby I could go to everyday, but I don't, but i'll live

@gab: How would you suggest "researching" sites to know what kind of history is there? So far I've only been going to public parks, but not a lot of luck yet.
