Any tips from the Eldorado county folks on free panning areas? Something that allows primitive camping so I can stay awhile?

I plan on backpacking in the national forest south and east of Grizzly flats this summer, but would like to try something a little lower in elevation before my summer trip. Is there anywhere I can legally camp and pan for a week or two that doesn't cost an arm and leg. I prefer primitive camping and do not need the facilities of a pay campground. Anything like a scenic wildlife area, or recreational area that allows panning and dispersed camping?

I've been playing around in the Auburn recreational area and above (the 10$ day use fees are killing me), but would like to try something in Eldorado. Even something north of US 50 would be nice.

Any leads would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Cliff, are you still on this site. I have lived in Cameron park for the last 9 years and I am looking for someone to hunt with. My name is Sean and would like to catch up with you to discuss your experiences here in NorCal.
