New MD'er with a few ?'s

I purchased a cheap MD for my daughter for Christmas, the whole family has gotten hooked and I thought I would purchase a better one. I have narrowed it down to the Tesoro Cibola, the Fisher 1225-x and the Garrett Ace 250. I think I am leaning toward the Fisher. I have done a lot of digging with the cheaper one and am hoping the pinpoint mode on the better ones will help.....will it ? Any advice on which one will be the best for me will help alot.( I use it mostly on grass but occasionally on saltwater beaches) THANKS

Re: New MD'er with a few ?'s

well if serious check out a Minelab,or a whites, skip the Garrets "no offense to those who own",but from my point of view and being a child of the digital age i suggest the 2 compies i mentioned,....

why buy a 500 dollar piece of crap when the extra 3 or 4 hunderd will pay off if your serious!....

Pinpointing is the game you have to learn for yourself,....everyone has thier own way, pinpointer or not!....,there is a spot on your coil that will be the "HOT SPOT",in which you use to determine where the item is,....move around the target, move the coil left to right to get a sort of wavey sound--your over the target and dig!,
but i use a 20 dollar wizard "looks l;ike a pistol",but it works better than afew high dollar pinpointers/probes,.....

coils and size have alot to do with your question also,i suggest any detector you get, toss the stock coil and get a smaller sized coil,......easier on locating your digs and your arm/back...lol,.

hope that helps or even answerd your question

I swing a Minelab Quattro myself, and my wife is taking an interest in it so I've been doing a lot of research for entry level detectors. I was looking at the Fisher 1225x and couldn't find anything good written about them. From what I've read so far is that for the money the Ace 250 gives you the most bang for the buck at just $199.00 and free shipping! I've read far more positive than negative on the Ace 250 so I'm kinda leaning towards that. Just my opinion! 8)

All three of the machines you narrowed it down to are quality picks. Good reviews on all machines. I guess it does depend on the amount of money you wish to invest. The Ace 250 is tough to beat at $200 but than you can not find a deeper machine than the Cibola for $340. Just going up the money tree will provide better performance. One point to remember when deciding between the Cibola and the Fisher 1225x is that the Cibola has a set ground balance. In most areas this is no problem but if you are in mineralized ground you need a manual ground balance. Folks usually move up to the Cibola's big brother the Vaquero in mineralized ground which is a Cibola with a manual ground balance.

I would go either with the Fisher or the Tesoro.(My pick in mild ground would be the Cibola - you get high end depth and discrimination with no bells and whistles eg- no digital) I am one who believes that Newbies would not buy a VDI screen for their first detector- learn the basics- learn the sounds- learn your machine- too much reliance with new folks on meters.

The 250 is a lot of fun to swing and the price is right. I don't know much about the Fisher or Tesoro, but I do own a 250 and really enjoy hunting with it. It is a sensitive machine and I have dug some deep targets with it. If you are going to coinshoot, the 250 is great. It bangs like mad on coins.

very true!....the tone is the key!........

But also the gound/state etc etc is a key part to how a detector will work in your area "Ground Balance" as mention on one of the above posts.....

But anything mentioned above is better than a 200 dollar Bounty Hunter.,,,,,,,BH's are too cheap and also to much falsing even when senseitivity is turned to the 9 O'clock posistion.......

Re: New MD'er with a few ?'s

My Kids use a bounty hunter from wal mart and a garrett the size of a suitcase and we do just fine. I have a minelab after 40 years of detecting and i just got it in december. I wouldn't hesitate to recomend minelab but I think it's pricy for a kid. The kids just happy that you're doing something with them. If you want a life long metal detecting buddy go buy a liberty head dime and a quarter and plant them. Thats right I said make sure they find them. They'll be your treasure team forever
