New Front yard find, 1787 Connecticut Copper

Yesterday afternoon, was out hunting my front lawn right in the area where I pulled 4 stacked George III, and found 8
inches down a 1787 connecticut copper, readable but I am scared at trying to clean too much of the dirt and build up off the coin itself without it becoming un readable.

Yes, cleaning old Copper's can bring out more detail or cause a loss of detail.
Depending on the type of ground it seems like every one is a little different.
If you do decide to clean the coin - just go real easy - good luck !

Aquachigger on You-Tube shows a way to do a real basic clean with his fingernail and skin oil on old coppers. Does no harm and increases detail. You may want to look at that.

That looks like a really decent looking Connecticut copper even all dirty.

As for cleaning...well over doing it will hurt if done wrong but the trick is to be gentle and not use harsh products.


Removing the dirt and sealing the surface will bring the eye appeal and display ability that's desired.
It's a corroded dug coin that will never be worth a ton of cash to most collectors but it is a very nice dug coin that should be enjoyed.

Beautiful looking CT. Looks to have some meat on it and will clean up nicely.

I clean mine with a hot soapy bath, rinse with hot water.

I then use my wool Dremel buffer to get rid of the dirt and then rinse with hot water and repeat the Dremel cleaning until l'm satisfied.

I then coat with Ren wax and buff again with a clean wool buffer & wipe with a microfiber cloth, then put it in a 2x2 holder.

Really nice condition for a rare old coin with lots of detail even uncleaned. It looks like it has more than dirt on it. It looks like "bronze disease" to me. That is a type of soft corrosion. If it were my find, I'd try to get rid of that corrosion. I think it can be removed with careful effort and leave coin details more visible.

That's a beautiful coin! I don't think I would attempt further cleaning..I've trashed too many coins doing just that. Looks great as-is.

Congratulations on the old copper.

I might try brushing it with a soft toothbrush, and that's it.

Looking at the coin one can see it has started to loose some surface in certain areas. (Minor but its happening)
