So, I went back to that field where I found my second LC of the year. In the same general area (actually, right next to one of the holes from last weekend), I found my first-ever Liberty "V" nickel, a 1903:

Sadly, that was my only find in the field for the day. At dusk, as I was making my way through the woods to leave, I came to this short path that bisects the woods from the trail to the field. On a whim, I dropped the Pro off my shoulder, and on the first swing I got this less than an inch into the dirt:

My first half! And a silver one at that - and an O to boot! 1908-O Barber half. I was stunned, and elated. As I sat there in awe, I took a pic on my phone and sent it straight to Scott. He was still jealous of the V nickel; wait till he saw that! Then I stood up, swung again, and not five inches away came my next hit, another first:

Scott's response came in as I was digging this 1920 SLQ. Once I sent this pic, he had but three words: "On my way." Right before he showed up, I found a wheat penny within a foot of the other two holes. The date isn't fully legible yet so it's sitting in some peroxide.

Scott didn't swing when he got here, he just wanted to see my finds for himself. So, in all, I got my first V nickel & my first silver pocket spill (which was my first half, first silver half, and my first SLQ). I also got word that the hayfield where I found my quarter eagle and DB half cent has been cut but not baled, so there will be some tough decisions to make this week!

Thanks for reading!

Only thing that coulda made that hunt better would be finding a big ole silver dollar too! Super nice finds. Thanks for showing us.

Hunt of a lifetime, great memories! Congrats!

Omg, that would have been another first!

Anyone have any ideas on how I can get that red color off my nickels?

Beautiful coins. I don't have any luck cleaning nickels. I usually o more damage then good. I'm sure someone here will have a good method of doing so.

What signal did you get on the ATP? What settings were you running?

When I first got my AT Pro, I ran it in standard Coin mode until I got the hang of it, then I switched to Pro Coins mode. I keep my iron disc at 40, and my ground balance for my area seems to be a solid 81. Both the half and the SLQ rang in high 80s, like 87-89, as silver usually does. Clad quarters usually ring in mid 80s, like 84-87, dimes just below that at 81-83, copper & bronze pennies at 78-80. Then it's mostly junk until the early 50s, which is nickels and pulltabs. My one gold coin rang in a solid 60, if I remember right, and I dug it on a whim. Very glad I did, but that range is not a habitual target for me.
