Has anyone done their taxes yet? Although my wife and I both claim married and zero, we owed a butt load last year. I think this year is going to be worse.

My issue is that I am married with no dependents. I therefore claim married and zero all year, so theoretically I should not owe anything at the end of the year. Despite this, I owed thousands last year. Not only am I not getting a refund, but I owe.

I hate to say it but I would assume that is why people are leaving your state now to come to areas of the country that are more reasonable. With the end of being able to deduct your high state and local taxes, many folks got hurt and moved away to reduce the local tax burden. I know this is also true in the NE part of the country. I don't know what you do for a job, but this economy makes it easier to find work if you relocate than ever before.

I’m speaking solely federal taxes. I got a small refund on my state taxes last year. The federal tax is what’s irritating me.

I don't know what you do for a job, but this economy makes it easier to find work if you relocate than ever before.

Well my job is state specific and I wouldn’t be able to move to another state and do the same thing without going through six months of training. Plus I have 10 years left before I retire, and at age 55 I can retire at 115% of my income. So I’ll actually make more in retirement. See, California isn’t that bad.
