Welcome. No doubt there are some very knowledgeable Minelab users here that are always willing to help a new detectorist.

I've been looking at a used Minelab Vanquish 540 and would like to know how to test it before I commit to make sure it is all functioning as intended. I've never had a detector so I really feel at a disadvantage here. And can anyone tell me the difference between the 540 pro pack and the 540 premium pack ?

1st - Welcome Aboard! You didn't list your state (or country) in your profile. So, you might consider jumping over to Sub-Forum: Select Your Area.... and selecting location information (i.e., clubs, hunts, finds, legends, maps, etc.) directly related to your state (or country)...

2nd - You might consider posting your request on BRANDS > MINELAB for additional exposure...

Welcome.
Good idea these days given how many things straight out of a box have issues. I don't know that particular machine but some basic things to try is plug in the headphones to make sure its not scratchy and works, choose a program and have a nail, coin, pulltab and wave them over the coil watching and listening to the results.
I did those basics when I went to buy my XTerra to be sure all worked ok.
Good luck. 👍

I just moved to Roswell NM a year ago. Finished the house and now I have time to break out my ML 600. But I don't know of anyone else around here? Hoping there is someone out there?

Welcome !

Welcome aboard from the Texas Gulf Coast! Check out some of the local Metal Detecting Clubs in your area. I'm sure someone can help you there, and maybe in person.
