Ok Folks...I know this isn't a poisonous snake, but when it is in your bedroom it will make your heart skip a few beats. My wife walked in the bedroom and hollered..."SNAKE"...and I had the fight or flight syndrome...the flight almost won out. Then it hit me, if I don't find and get this snake, there will be another foreclosure in the near future. I didn't have anything to "whack" it with and I was barefooted..not an option at the time. It then slithered past the closet door...thank goodness it was shut and it couldn't get in there...and went straight behind my dresser. Of course, I had some of my good things behind there so I had to move some of the things and then I saw it...darn thing was looking at me. When he saw I had the killer look in my eyes, he slithered under the dresser and I was hoping he wouldn't get into one of the drawers. I thought..gun..then I thought.."hole in the floor" not good. After about 30 mins of cat and mouse I came out the victor...Time for a large drink....but all I have is Pepsi, so guess that will suffice. So, for all you snake lovers out there, can you tell me what kind it was??? I was thinking garter but not so much now..then I thought corn snake but not as bright a color...Thanks in advance...

Note sure but looks similar to a Gray rat snake but i could be way off.

"I thought..gun..then I thought.."hole in the floor" " Although not much fun finding snakes in ones home,
i couldn't help but laugh at that statement.

I thought corn snake at first, Brian..but it had a dullish color. The corn snakes I'm used to seeing is much brighter..The gray rat snake looked pretty similar. Nick, will be waiting for a snake call..lol

Rat snake. Some folks call them Gopher snakes. If you didn't kill it, take it out to the backend of your yard and let it go. Field mice, gophers, chipmonks, etc, attract rattlesnakes, too. I'd rather have one of these rat snakes hunting them than the rattlers. Also, never, never, never kill a King snake. They are enemies with rattlers and will kill and eat them. The King snake is not effected by rattler venom and will wrap around the rattler and kill it by constriction. Then, find its head and swallow it from the "head" end. Hey, nature at its best---Rat snakes to keep the field mice population down and King snakes to keep the rattlers at bay.

Shortstack, trust me, I'm not in the habit of killing snakes...but, I really couldn't tell what kind it was when it was under the dresser and at first glance, had the markings of a rattlesnake. I knew if it "escaped" from the dresser, I would not be sleeping in the house until his butt was found. He was not going to get away. We call the gopher snake a bull snake down here and he does look like that..they kinda resemble the rattlesnake and this little bugger was steady striking at the stick I was poking under the dresser with..Sorry for his demise but it was either him or the wife..lol

I don't care what kind of snake it is - WHACK IT
I can handle anything, bugs, rats, mice and so on
But I turn into a absolute sissy when it comes to a snake of any kind

"I thought..gun..then I thought.."hole in the floor" not good."

Sorry bud - I laughed my a$$ off with that line. Glad you were able to "strategically" restrain and dismiss Mr.Snake. Worst thing I had to deal with was a brown hornet (HUGE) - I ended up putting a hole in my ceiling whacking that monster... :D ;D

That looks just like a copper head. Do you have any woods nearby ? How about a creek or pond ? I used to get those in a house I used to live in, so we had to move.
Woods all around us but it wasn't a copperhead. If you notice real close you see this one had rounded eyes. The only poisonous snake we have here with round eyes are the coral snake and they stay well hid most of the time...Thank goodness.

Now I'm gonna add a bb gun to my collection....no holes in the floor from now on...

We got more snakes than you can imagine around here and in Australia in general. Rule is, if its in the house and you know what youre doing, kill it. Some people wait in the car, chainsmoking and wait for a snake catcher, but thats a waste of 100 bucks IMO.

Usually if they are in a yard, they are removed to the bush.

However in the country, where they are a real threat around sheds and barns and stuff, no ones gunna blink an eye at shooting them. The 12 gauge is the preferred method.

All our snakes are native and protected btw.

Gopher or rat snake. Good to have around if you have rats or mice in your house or outbuildings. They won't hurt you but can make you hurt yourself! Childhoood friend had one tht he fed white mice twice a month. Really cool to watch him catch and swallow the mouse. He wouldn't eat it dead. Not a really good house pet, won't do any tricks, doesn't like walking on a leash and doesn't mind. ::) Monty

I do alot of herping here in SC and I do know my snakes. That is a grey rat snake, you are right about the corns being more colorful. The corn snake is just another type of rat snake. It is not venomous, I do not approve of killing them but I understand the circumstances though.

Heres a pic of a yellow rat snake that I found down here in SC.

Oh and buy the way I had to laugh because I could just imagine the reaction you had, due to the fact that your not a snake person. :sign10: Glad you decided against the gun you don't want to put holes in floor your wife inturn probably would have shot you.

And thought I would add a pic of a corn snake for ya to. This was also found in SC.

Mobes, I don't usually kill the snakes...but I didn't get a long long look at the rascal...My front half was looking for the door and my neck was screwed around backwards..Kinda like the girl in the Exorcist..lol After the deed was done, I realized it was not poisonous, but no way could I have let it slip away..I saw a few of your posts with the snakes..and yep, we had a lot of corn snakes around our barn when I was a kid.

SC,
I am laughing with you!
About a month ago my wife walked into my office and started yelling "snake" and running around.

I was on the phone with tech support on a network issue. I turned around and there was the biggest garter snake I had ever seen.
I set the phone down and ran around the office trying to catch him.
Finally got him and put him outside.

The tech support was from, you guessed it, India. He waited patiently and then said, "Well, at least it wasn't a cobra."

Kinda startles you doesn't it?

LMAO

Come down to Swamp land, where it's common to find a 6 foot Cottonmouth in your back yard. I have eliminated three this year so far. The wife keeps a shovel by the yard swing, just in case. We average 3 to 5 kills per year. My West highland Terrier has taken out two for her count.. She is a very efficient snake destroyer. Looks like a cute ball of white fur but turns into the Tasmanian Devil when she sees one.
