Me and Juanmoretime made a hunt this weekend and found several interesting pieces. One of them was this dish shaped eagle button. The only backmarks is the word GILT and what appears to be 4 or 5 small crosses or x's. This is one of a very few dished buttons that I've ever found and the only one that I've seen the crosses on. There also appears to be a letter on the shield on the front of the button but it may be just from the decay. I would appreciate any help in identifying and dating this one.

Looks a bit like an 'X' on the shield. WAG but the 'Tenth' Infantry Militia type :icon_scratch:

Or maybe it's a R.

Does kind of look like a riflemen button (15 c, page 78 Albert).

A - Artillery
D - Dragoon
R - Rifleman
V - Voltigeurs
C - Calvary

Did I miss any?

The button looks like a no-name or disguised name pre-civil war one piece.

When Ricky first found this and we got out the magnifing glass and before it was cleaned up, it appeared to me to be a definite A in the middle. There was something there and to me it looked like the very middle of the letter A, the small triangle in the middle to me seemed very clear and easy to see and I had to assume ( I hate that word ) it could only be an A. Oh well, so much for my description. I can see what you're talking about the X in the middle now, oh well, the back sure was in good shape. Good job Ricky, it kills me to walk over these and leave them for you to find!!! ROFL!!! That'll be the day!!!

I would like to see a better shot of the front. With good, natural sunlight.

It looks like there is a letter in the shield. Your button appears to be a one-piece button, but I can't tell that from your photo of the back either.

Jim, you missed one.

"E" :wink:

Montana Jim

Where did you find your "I" button at. It sure is a pretty one

That is a dug relic, found very shallow in a horse field out here in Montana near an US Army Infantry staging area, lost between the mid 1860s and the early1890s.

Its in great shape. Our soil around here is much too harsh to ever find one in that condition

It looks like a "A" or a "R" but I would lean more to the "A" in the shield to me.Like Montana Jim said also pre CW Era.A great find
Congrats

We have great and forgiving soil... I've dug bunches of these and many with gilt left... but THIS one was a spectacular find with only a minor "push" in the middle.

It's not as old as the find posted here though, which I would have been just as happy to find. :)
