Found this button at a old place today front has maybe wheat stack/tree with mountains behind it with a sun rising over the mountain. Back is toast can't get any info off of back. It has a gold gilt on the front. Bigger then a dime but smaller then a quarter. Thanks in advance.

look at "ohio state seals"== i think it might be a state seal type military button
* sheaf of wheat on right side -- 13 arrows in a bundle upright on the left side (representing the first 13 states)

Page 221 of Alberts book -

I think 6 A and B look close-

OH 6 Ohio; the State Seal 2 piece
A. The device on a Union shield. "Waterbury Button Co ***" RV1
B. Similar device, the sun's rays extend to the border. "*Jacob Reeds Sons*/Phila" RV1

with out back markings hard to prove exact maker / age --but the type of mounting shank type used can assist in figgering it out --age wize somewhat

Thanks for all the info so far found a 1864 & 1865 IHP in the same hole like a pocket spill. I'm happy with whatever it is my 1st state seal button. :icon_thumleft: ;D

if it had 1864 and 1865 IH cents with the button there most likey its a CW era ohio state seal button -- thus a very rare find indeed. $$$ so handle with great care -- do not clean it you will screw up the gilt most likely -- if its indeed a legit ohio state seal CW button get it cleaned by a pro to protect its worth.

I have no clue if it is a cw era or not all I know is its my best button find so far shame the back is rusted can't even get 1 letter off the back with a magnifying glass. In this place I have dug a few times newer coins under older coins the dirt got turned over at some point so its hard to say. Oldest coin to come out of here was a 1729 King George II penny, oldest american silver was a 1833 capped bust half. This place never ceases to amaze me.
