Hello everyone nice to meet you all. As this is my first post :)

I recently purchased an MXT with standard 950 coil (not the pro, the tracker E series) I use nice pair of whites headphones with sound dampener controls. I have been trying to learn this machine now for about a month to no avail. With my old metal detector I had way less problems.

I have previous detecting experience over 2 years worth 10 hrs each weekend unless winter hits. I purchased this detector after 30-40 hours of research Prior to my purchase (friends, research, books, including "The MXT Edge") and over 40 hours of use over the past month.

1. The metal detector is unable to give a VDI number even close to the material found in the ground even 1 inch deep. However it gives the exact correct numbers when doing an "air" test.

2. When I dropped a 24k 10k gold rings and silver bracelet in the ground 1 inch down the detector was telling me it was Iron with negative numbers 99% of the sweeps in coin and relic mode. The silver bracelet seem to give me a few positive 50's. In prospect mode they would read at 50% -60% iron.

In general over any target at any dept i can sweep the coil 100 times over the target and get a different VDI number each time jumping from 95 to 0 to -70 to 50 to 30 to they are never the same and NEVER in the same general area to get an average.

General information about the ground I hunt.
I hunt mostly old backyards and parks.
Tons of rocks Granite being the most prevalent.

I have tried what I consider is every setting on the machine possible leaving it there for an hour at time to run tests and go over areas previously done by other detectors.

In the past month I have found 3 dollars in change no ears, rings, bracelets and about 100000000 pieces of iron.

In my mind the only thing I am able to conclude is that this detector is defective or my coil is damaged, or the machine simply needs to be tossed in the trash. If this is really how this detector was designed to work then it's simply a waste of time using this machine.

Thanks in advance to any advice or comments.

It's definitely not the way an MXT should behave. You have as you thought a bad coil or your machine isn't working correctly. First thing would be to check the coil by trying another or try your coil on another detector. If you can't do either then a trip to the factory is in order. White's will repair the detector or the coil if it's the later 950 coil. The newer 950 coils that can be repaired are thicker and have an embossed top (with humps or bumps). If it's an older flat coil it can't be repaired. White's customer service is great and most times they will repair your detector for a nominal charge and often for free. Give White's a call and they'll tell you what to do. I've been quoted a price and actually had my check returned to me with my detector.

When you sweep a target over & over & over in salt or ground mode with the MXT it will attempt to ground balance out what ever your sweeping the coil over because the machine doesn't know your sweeping the exact same area repeatedly, it thinks the ground your sweeping is new ground & attempts to block out your target while auto tracking & ground balancing its self. When sweeping the same area over & over it's best to flip the switch from ground or salt to LOCKED. The MXT Pro has the ground grab feature right under the LCD screen but with the regular MXT you just gotta flip the switch on the right side of the machine to the locked position.

Dunno if this is why your numbers are off but it's possible. If not then you have a defect with the machine or the coil.

The mxt is not as that at all. I had one until last week. It's very very constant in its readings and if it says pull tab it's quite accurate, same goes for other coin readings.
I could I.d. A target up to 5-6 inches deep having a very steady vdi, if the item was deeper that the vdi started to jump.
My feeling is that you have a problem with your machine. Talk to whites they will help you out, best CS. I have ever encountered.

Thanks for all the advice and comments thus far and for the ones to come. Will be contacting Whites tomorrow. Should of before now just not one to complain, however this time the frustration got the better of me.

Well I hope it works out for you. I have never had that much problems with my MXT's. Keep us posted, Tim

Welcome to the forum and your MXT. You have one of the best machines ever built. You do have a problem with it or the coil as it should not be acting that way. White's will take care of that for you.

Best of luck to you. Between Whites Customer Service and the MXT you won't need any luck.

MXT is a great choice.

After calling White's customer service they went above and beyond to get my issues solved. I wont go into to much detail as I don't want people to abuse their awesome service. My coil is set to be replaced thanks for all the help / responses will update this at a later date if the problem is not solved or I can provide more information that may help another user in the future.

That's what I'm talking about!

Here is an overall update on how the MXT has been going with the new coil. I also recently purchased an MXT Pro for for myself and gave the MXT to my son. Once the new 950 coil arrived I did some tests vs the 12" 300 coil on the MXT-Pro. The VDI settings on most of the objects seem to be coming up correct. Gold Ring came up 30 everytime on both, and normaly got most of the same VDI's on coins 1,5,10,25,50 coins. The 12 inch was more constant at deeper depths this of course I figure is due to the larger coil size.

Finds after 950 got replaced!

20 dollars in standard change mostly quarters from surfaces in parks.
1x 1942 nickel
1x 1932 nickel
Glass necklace had small silver centerpiece
1x 5.33gram 14k Gold band!!
few hundred pull-tabs :)
I love the 950 coil on the standard MXT I need a coil to replace my 12" so....

I purchased a 6x10 eclipse DD after reading all the good reviews on this site and others and had a few questions.

I am unable to adjust the gain over the <carrot so no +1 +2 or +3 is this normal? (simply goes into overload on both MXT and MXT Pro)
The deepest I could find anything was 5 inches and it had a hard time telling a penny from foil at 2-3 inches.

Please keep in mind I only have about 2 hours on the 6x10. My first impressions told me the 950 was a better coil all around.

If your coil is giving an overload signal when there is no EMI around then its going bad I had a couple of the 12" coils do this when I first got my detector and they only got worse as time went on till I couldn't even turn the gain up to 6 without getting the overload signal. The house of course is not a good place to test because of all the electrical stuff in the house, the D2 coil(whites 10"DD coil) got as deep as the 12" coil for me with better separation being that its a DD coil, but it does pick up more EMI than the other coils. It will find very small targets very deep so plan on digging alot, I would send the coil back for a replacement if its overloading as it shouldn't be doing that, the only thing that it will do is increase the chatter the higher you turn the gain up. The threshold will get a little unstable and noisy the more you turn the gain up, I try and run +2 gain most of the time for more depth but any more than that there's to much noise, but it shouldn't be overloading.
