So I'm planning my next road trip in a couple weeks. Some of the towns and communities I will be going to have a medium to large Amish population. I'm thinking this could mean I will be completely skunked or could rack in some serious silver at these banks in these areas. Anyone have any insight to the Amish and their relation to silver? Do they value it more considering I guess they are more old school? If not, I am thinking maybe they would have old coins since I guess their tradition is kind of "Old Timey". I'm hoping this translates into bringing rolls into the bank loaded with silver. What are your all's thoughts? I mean, I guess I could always just call the banks but I didn't know if any of you had prior experiences hitting banks in Amish communities. Thanks for your thoughts!

I'm surrounded by Amish and Mennonites here in Kentucky. If they're into silver they're keepin' it to themselves. It doesn't help the CHR'n here.

So, how do I start? I don't think they are any different than any other culture in the U.S. in terms of news. They read the paper and keep up on current events. This group is highly literate. Don't let articles fool you that their children only receive a 6th grade education. Learning is more than books to them. They understand "currency"--and perhaps understand the dollar better than non-Amish Americans do(?).

We have a large Mennnite Community close to where I live (off shoot from the Amish). They know the value of items just like "we" do. So, I would not bank on any large deposits of silver coins coming your way from those areas that are specifically the Amish. They are savers--not extravagant spenders. They know the value of a dollar--including silver.

Now, regular citizens in the area. . . that is a different matter all together. A good investment would be any handmade item from the Amish community. This was a very good topic that I have not seen on the net. Thank you for that!

I've heard of amish communities trading silver dimes for a dozen eggs and some bread... they realize the true value of it and i think you would be LESS likely to find silver then ignorant "normal" folks going about our complex lives.

"normal?" I could not resist. Sorry. I like to think that the First Amendment applies to all Americans. Especially freedom of religion. The few folks left on this forum that I know, know that statement would get a rise out of me. :)--and it did! :laughing9:

I would say these people are more "normal" than most of the welfare sucking entitlement class that is being breed within our midst. When TSHTF these people will be self sufficient while the "normal" people are figuring out that their Xboxes, Ipads, 50 inch TV's and other junk wont feed and shelter them as the government they love so much has done for so many year. You better believe these people know the value of silver.

I never thought about this until now...I grew up near Amish communities and continue to live near them to this day....just never had the need to answer this question.

Do the Amish bank? I've always seen the Amish with cash/coin, but never with a Check or Debit/Credit Card....

I agree completely. Further, they probably don't have their kids all jacked up on ADHD type pills because little johnny won't behave like many "normal" families do these days.

I wouldn't personally like to live like the Amish, but I have respect for those that do. They are probably more happy and content than many of us.

Amen to that Jim.

I just remembered this last night. A couple of weeks ago a couple of Mennonite kids came into the coin shop that I visit and were trading and buying coins. They know what silver is.
