Howdy all. I believe this is the first time I have posted in the "what is it" section. I'm having some trouble identifying a small bell I found earlier today.
The wife and I drove about 35 minutes out of town into the foothills northeast of Fresno California today to pick up our little girl from grandmas house. My inlaws have a 14 acre lot out there and I have never hunted it. Finally decided to bring the detector out and swing for an hour or so while I still had some light.
Found some clad and other junk, but the one find that really caught my eye was this small bell. At first I thought it was a big fishing sinker weight due to its shape, but then I realized there was a split filled with dirt and some engraving on both sides. Upon cleaning it up, the "dingler " still dings and the engraving looks to be a hand-scribed flower or sunburst.
I know it's nothing too exciting or amazing, but I don't find many relics here in central California. I know crotal bells come up a lot back east, but I never see anything like that around here.
The area dates back to the mid-late 1800s. Was ranch land before the town popped up.
Thanks for any info on my little jingle bell! Sorry for the long post! HH and GL
