Got out in a foot of snow this afternoon for about 3 hours. It was actually nice...ground was soft as can be and you could easily grid out sections because you can see where you've been in the snow. A few colonial buttons got my blood pumping so I knew a coin had to be in there somewhere, also found a nice buffalo nickel, fired spencer bullet, fired round ball and I need help with the copper. Back is toasted, but the front you can see part of the bust, but it's not matching any of the U.S coins, plus it came in really low on the F75 like a 55 and large coppers usually come in at 81. Any help would be great! Thanks for looking and HH!

It is a William III Halfpenny 1695-1701

I have quite a few of them and most read low on the Explorer SE, so no surprise on your low VDI numbers.

We're having a debate on the position of the ribbons on facebook, Don. lol They seem to be positioned very high on the head, don't you agree? But I'm quite sure we can rule out any U.S. coppers.

Rotate your photo, I cant see it in person but rotating the photo it looks right to me, also again, the low reading matches other William IIIs.

Hey Don,I'm one of the guilty ones debating the william theory.look at the ribbon.seems like it's on the middle of the head.where as williams & georges the ribbon is down in the neck area.

ah ha! leave it to the the frenchmen to make one adjustment! good thinkin IP! that's it!

Thanks guys. Thanks Iron Patch for the ole switcheroo. It was kinda hard to tell which way it went, my bad on the wrong position of the coin. lol This makes it my oldest copper and oldest coin, last was a 1731 KG II and the 1708 german silver.

Very nice find - congrats!

But I can't believe your ground isn't frozen! :icon_thumleft:

Not sure how you swung through a foot of snow Matt, but obviously you manged to do it with great success. Congrats on your copper and other nice finds.

Nice finds Matt!! That bullet has a great patina on it. I walked a good 5 miles today looking for a lost Yankee camp. It's still lost-LOL. I did cut a tent grommet in half because the ground was frozen 4 in. deep. Stay warm & HH, Q.

Swung just above the snow. Maybe because the snow was powdery, I was still able to get some depth? Thanks!

You sure are a trooper Matt. Winter is the only time we can get out around here so if this weather continues to be like it has, I may just have to grow a pair and get out there. Congrats on your oldest!

Thanks, Joey. Same here pretty much. I do seasonal work. If I don't get out I will go stir crazy. I was inside for 4 days after the snow hit so I had to get out!

nice finds! the snow "insulates " the ground keeping it from freezing.

When it first snowed 8 inches up here,no problem. Then it melted to a inch froze everything solid.\:BangHead:

That is some hard core hunting Matt :notworthy: . Nice finds too. You have to be losing a lot of depth if the snow was a foot deep, so you will definitely want to go over that same ground once the snow melts. Good to see that much snow down there. The grass will be nice and flat in some of my spots in Jefferson County when I head down during the next thaw!

Deepest targets you'd be surprised were still 9 inches and big iron over a foot. I found more in the back of that field with the snow on the ground then I did when there wasn't. Strange, huh?
