Need help with ID please

I am trying to locate information on a button a recently found. I assume it is US Army WWI based on where I found it. My problem is that I am not sure what uniform item the button would have come from. The button is the size of a small eagle button. The face is flat and reads from top to middle to bottom "Crown" "B&A" "Brand". I believe the button is steel because the reverse is rusted and I cannot detemine if any other markings are on the reverse.

My presumption is the button is from a campaign hat but the photos I saw of the 1917 campaign hat had no visible buttons. If needed I can take and post a photo at a later date.
