okay first off I know never buy the story buy the piece and that what I did, the ball is right at 4.50 I don't have a caliber and weight is right at 12 pounds plus I thought it was a neat piece (told it was dug in Charleston in 1963?) plus it was cheap, the only reason I am posting here is when I cleaned it up a little bit I saw this plugged hole it is right at 1/2 inch across and it doesn't appear to be lead more like the same cast iron as the ball hoping the Cannonball Guy will give his opinion on this thanks

Great relic Im gonna need another bucket for my list nice find

TCBG has been Sickly lately & is greatly missed, as 'Relic Nut ' stated on another CW Post , He does pop up fro time to time on the 'What is it forum' maybe you can post there ?

IMO your ball look's Good to Go , The Iron fill is different than the Lead but I do think ??? both metals were used to plug the holes.

Does your ball have a Fuse of some type ?

Hey Arky, those balls could have lead or iron plugs. I found one with an iron plug like yours....mine is a CSA side-loader found at a late war site and has a brass fuse adapter. Like Davers asked, does it have any type of fuse hole? Good luck finding more info.--JB

Most cannon balls were hollow inside allowing them to have powder and shrapnel inside and then a fuse. Some 12 pounders has a plug installed for a demolishing effect such as going through concrete or even boat hulls.
