Is there any sign of a fastener having been on the other side? A simple search to show the general idea: http://www.google.com/search?sclien....0...1c.1.64.tablet-gws..3.6.1597.Ce1Bavh6Uik And I could be wrong but it has the appearance of EPNS (electro plate nickel silver, which isn't silver), just by the way the dents and scuff look.
