Re: Need help on some bullet ID's

For the top row I'd guess what you have from left to right is a 38/357, a 9mm, and a 308/7.62mm rifle bullet. All on the top appear relatively modern.

The bottom row however appears older, no idea there.

Dude I like the pic of the truck, My daughter has a '65 Ford van. The bullet on the bottom right looks civil war. It's kind of hard to tell from the pics but it lookslike it might be a sage. The top 2 are modern and the bottom left one looks more modern. If it has a dish base and /or crimps in the ring it is definitely modern.

I agree with current assessments. The bottom ones are older, probably black powder era and could be rifle or revolver depending on weight. That's all I can tell from the information available. Monty

Thanks for all the input so far.

I am mainly trying to figure out what the bottom ones are. The one on the bottom right looks as if it could be a sabot. It looks like it has some type of jacket on it, and the .50 caliber makes it seem like it is a modern muzzleloader bullet. The bottom middle and left I do not know.

Is the weight the only other information you need? I don't have a way to weigh the number of grains.

Re: Need help on some bullet ID's

I missed the ones all the way on the right. :tongue3: Sorry. The top one is a modern bullet. The bottom right one looks like it could be a civil war Gallager Carbine. They had a brass cartridge that was rounded at the end. The bullet had a blunt nose and 3 rings with a shallow cavity in the base. The middle one on the bottom looks like a civil war sage but looks like it is fired and might be a distorted Adams. The one on the bottom left I believe is modern. If it has a shallow depression in the base and/or crimps in the ring it is modern.

Re: Need help on some bullet ID's

Give the weight in ounces then and conversion tables are available online. Of the ones marked .41 and then .50, is one of them jacketed? I think the old .41 caliber bullets actually measured .401 unfired and the .50 cals were a true .500". .44s were .429" I believe is the correct measurements? There were many variations however. Monty,

The .50 is jacketed. The .41 is not.

I will get the weights and post them. I will also take a couple of pictures from other angles.

Thanks,

Re: Need help on some bullet ID's

I've never seen a .50 cal full jacketed bullet with that round nose configuration. Are you sure it isn't a .45? If it is, it probably is a .45 ACP and should weigh about 230 grains. The .41 is possibly an old .41 rimfire handgun bullet, but that is just a wfg. There are so many different calibers and varieties of bullets it is very difficult to make a positive ID in many cases. But I can tell some of them are very old and others are not. Monty

Here are some other pictures that may help. I said that the .50 caliber was jacketed because of the red material around it. I may be wrong about that being a jacket. What do you think?

Re: Need help on some bullet ID's

The .50 caliber isn't jacketed. The brass is part of a casing. The bullet looks like a civil war period Gallagher carbine
