Please bear with my I'm newly addicted to this Hobby called Metal Detecting. Found this yesterday and thought it was a washer at first but the line down the middle of it stumps me. Anybody got a clue on this. Thanks!

Metal Detecting come #2 when it comes to duckhunting not even close. Now if I start finding large silver cache or any silver for that matter it might change ;D

I thought that I would share this with everyone. Here is a link that says that they could be coat weights.
Check this out and see what you think.(Dual purpose).Scroll down about half way down.

I like how they say "definitely Civil War or before era".

I would imagine CW lead coat weight/buttons are similar. I dont know how to tell the difference. :dontknow: His $3 weights look 20th century. Thanks for sharing.

"Hem" weights is a more accurate term I think... used for curtains, coats, other hems, and some say buttons in a pinch - which is completely feasible.

Marketing ploy, & I question his ID! (some might be, prove to me which are & which aren't!)
I have no loyalitys to using his site.

Looking at greybirdrelics pictures, he has several different kinds. Im not familiar with this site but Jim says its a good one. I think the ones with the numbers are modern (unless they made them exactly the same for 150 years). I agree some might be and some may not be. I notice his $5 weights are different.

Lonelyduckhunter, where did you find it and how old is the site?

Thanks for bringing this to our attention forttball9.

I heard that they used weights for coats but I wonder how long it took them to realize they were carrying unnecessary lead weights on long hikes and would be better suited melting them into bullets... :D

I was going to say something yesterday about questioning his CW era on these weights...but decided not to get in to it.
However, now that it's being talked about...lol

Anyway, I'm old enough to remember these being all over the place and none of them had any numbers on them...this being from the 50's through out the time I saw them (and grandma had loads of them in her button boxes, in case she needed them). They looked "exactly" like what that site has posted as CW era.

I don't know from CW items, but I do know what curtain or coat weights look like and I'd be interested in knowing how he can claim "definitely Civil War or before era" :dontknow:

I'm not saying they're right or wrong...just wondering how they can make that claim.
Maybe finding it in a CW area deep enough to indicate it "had" to be buried for at least that long?

I dont know if this means anything but his $5 weight/buttons(top pic) are different from his $3 "buttons". (bottom pic $3).

Ok, well I think it's important to note that his lead coat buttons that he says are definite civil war era, have the same kinds of mold marks on them that a button posted in another thread has, where someone said these mold (from being made by a mold) marks make the item no older then the 40's, 50's? (I can't remember when they said molds started being used)

(Mold marks were talked about here: http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,252563.msg1808166.html#msg1808166)

I'd like to see the reverse of the "Non dug weight/coat buttons"

I don't know anything about CW relics, but I do know I saw these everywhere in the 50's and 60's and they look exactly the same, both the buttons and the weights.

Stuff like this makes me crazy...lol...only because I'd really like to know/learn, but get conflicting information.

I dont really know. :dontknow: What I said, on the other post, was that I found a lead piece with the same round mold markings at a house built in the 50's. I would like to learn more about these round mold marks as well.
