It is a cob. Hammered silver Spanish coin. Probably 1600s.

No wonder why I never found one.Could they have made them smaller? It looks like the bits of junk I dump out of my bag at the end of the day.

Thanks guys. The only thing that stood out was how high it rang on the deus. Truth be told the round edges on the cross extremeties were all that shown through the dirt coating when I wiped it after pulling out of the hole. I thought it was some sort of crude button. Once I brought it back and rinsed it and let it dry I got to looking at the detail and posted the ID then thought "oh crap!". If only I could know the story behind just how it got here to central va!!! What an honor to have saved it!
