I found a brass belt plate while detecting on an old Indian trail in Williamsport PA. I found it 10" deep of the side of the trail. It is made of brass and I think has the old English letters for NY on it. It is 3" long x 2" wide. Can someone help me out? I would like to know where and when it came from if it is possible. Any information would be appreciated.

Your buckle find is an 1851-1870 New York State Militia Officer's sword-belt buckle. The narrow-width of the "tongue" hook and exact-match of the shape of the letters NY indicates your specimen was manufactured between 1861 and 1863. See photos of Plate #667 on page 402 in the book "American Military Belt Plates" by Michaeld J. O'Donnel and J. Duncan Campbell.
