I've had these for many years but never attempted to identify them beyond the obvious. All were found in the Fredericksburg area in CW camps or home sites. The one looks like a Spanish treasure coin but it was found at a spot that had a verly early house (circa 1730), a revolutionary camp (I found most of a British Cartridge Box Plate), and major Union winter encampment. Not sure what to make of it being found inland?? All thought's and ID's appreciated.

#1 is a bit hard to make out .

#2 is a spanish silver hand cut and punched "cob" type coin --thus its a older type than the later era machine made types

#3 last coin --the holed one--- is a "machine made" type spanish 1781 --1/2 real coin from the mexico city mint --the assayers are FF

note ---spanish money was commonly used in early america and was legal tender money till about mid 1830 's in the usa

Wow...really nice finds! You don't see those in my neck of the woods! (West Michigan)

Spanish Coins circulated freely as legal tender in the US until 1857.

The Coinage Act of February 21, 1857 retired Spanish Coins from circulation. They were supposed to be turned in and exchanged for US Silver and Copper Coins. The same Coinage Act also discontinued the Large Cent and Half Cents. This is the year that small cents first began to circulate in the form of the Flying Eagle Cent. There were also Flying Eagles minted in 1856, but they were considered pattern coins and were given out to members of congress and other officials as samples for evaluation. They're EXTREMELY rare as only 2000-2500 were minted. A few got out in circulation so who knows? Maybe we'll find one someday!

BTW, I got the above info on the Coinage Act of 1857 from the Red Book.

Congrats on the SWEEEEET finds,

I dont think I have any 1/2s to compare. I dug a 1, 2, 8 and some pieces years ago.

I take it you mean any type of reales, not just cobs. Finding an 8 reale cob would be a pretty amazing find in North America. I'd be happy just with a 2R, all mine being either half or one.

Just talking reales in general it's the 4 I don't have, which does make sense because it's by far the hardest to find.

That would be the one place I'd expect it! After that, maybe VA. I sure would love to see one of those in the dirt here.

Not many people can say they found one of those!

I may never find another unless we have a bad hurricane then Ill be ready, hopefully. I found it in the 80's. Maybe I need to try harder but the beach renourishment here is kind of depressing.

I believe side 1 of coin 2 is the monogram of Philip. Which Philip could be determined by the date. I think the "OC" or what initially appears as "70" is actually the last two digits of the date, but what appears as a "7" may, in fact, be either a "2" or a "5". Any ideas?

Yep, and I believe I have one very close. It's 1709.

Here's a picture. Actually, now comparing, it's closer in size than I first thought. Mine is a half real.

The Pistareen is 2 reales, bottom left is a 1R, two on the far right are also 1R, and rest are 1/2 reals.

Glad to see I could stir such a lively conversation. I re-shot the two questionable coins using a dime and measuring tape for refrence. I also oriented them to what I believe is the intended viewing angle. Hopefully this will help - I cannot do anything about the weights though.

That's what I posted it. Read above. :-X
I modified my post by adding "As IP said." I guess I missed it. I must have thought you were just showing your finds. I hope it was OK to crop and enlarge your picture.

Many thanks for the new pics; they are most helpful and they show more detail than the earlier one.
It's now easy to see/scale that your original first coin is definitely a 1/2 R; 16 mm as compared to the US dime at 17.9 mm.
The obverse legend would read: FRD VI D G HISP ET IND R
The reverse legend would read: VTRA QUE VNUM Mo 1757 (as Cru mentioned) M.

I posted the group shot instead of the single coin because I already had the picture saved. I also included what they were just to show the size difference.

I would post mine but I cant find them all. Its nice to be able to keep all your finds. :icon_thumright: Years ago I spent one in a pay phone. I was broke down in the middle of nowhere, found a pay phone after walking half the night, reached in my pocket, pulled out a silver Spanish coin I had found earlier in the swamp and made my phone call. True story. :'(

What date do you think dig-dugs is? 1704?

I have sold some stuff, mostly doubles and junk, but a few decent keepers because I felt it was the right thing to do... and I still do. Some things I will not part with and my 17 Spanish silver are included. I can remember the circumstance of finding every one of them.

Not sure what the date is on his, would just be a guess.
