I've had these for many years but never attempted to identify them beyond the obvious. All were found in the Fredericksburg area in CW camps or home sites. The one looks like a Spanish treasure coin but it was found at a spot that had a verly early house (circa 1730), a revolutionary camp (I found most of a British Cartridge Box Plate), and major Union winter encampment. Not sure what to make of it being found inland?? All thought's and ID's appreciated.

#1 is a bit hard to make out .

#2 is a spanish silver hand cut and punched "cob" type coin --thus its a older type than the later era machine made types

#3 last coin --the holed one--- is a "machine made" type spanish 1781 --1/2 real coin from the mexico city mint --the assayers are FF

note ---spanish money was commonly used in early america and was legal tender money till about mid 1830 's in the usa

Yes Sir! Cobs seem to love my coil and I love them back. I dig an average of one per year which destroys everyone I know anywhere close to me. So I have been very lucky! It's for the most part the only really old silver we dig here.

What is the dia (mm) and weight (g) of coins one and two; or put a modern US coin next to them and retake the pics. Thanks.

I'd say... 1R, 1R, Half real but we'll see. The first one is hard to tell when just making a quick guess.

I don't have a scale to get the weight but the sizes are approximately that of a US Roosevelt Dime or smaller.

Check out your threads in the Best finds section (Displays and Best condition). I posted in both places.

I agree with Cru on the first coin's date 1757. Looks like a Fernando VI 1/2 real. The REVERSE legend would read: VTRA QUE VNUM M (date) M. Some of these letters are apparent on the coin. But the obverse doesn't match the reverse; interesting.

They all being the size of a dime sounds like all are 1/2 reales.

I'd be very surprised if the cob is a half and not a 1 real by the looks of it.

If my cobs mean anything by comparison the half reals are a touch smaller, and the 1 reals a bit bigger. So just being about a dime in size doesn't mean enough. Also, my half reals design takes up much more of teh coin than the one above. That's why it looks like a 1R to me.
