Founds these buttons with my newly acquired Metal Detector and need help identifying these buttons. I have found numerous WWI and WWII buttons but this Navy button looks older. The second button is different and cool looking but have no idea what its from. Any help is greatly appreciated. The last to pictures appear to be some sort of badge or something with a (pat. 12.15.08.) My buddy found this one in New Mexico desert mining town. We can seem to identify it even with the marked patent number. If anyone can advise????

Thanks a million,
JFlo

Thanks nhbenz! I'm sure my friend will be happy to know what it is...! As far as the Navy button, its the firsts Navy button out of a least 15 eagle buttons found in an old dump that dates from the early 20's - 1950's. The back is missing... As for the other button i have no idea what it is. I guess i will try and find the other piece to the buckle, the last time we were at that site i found two V nickels from 1905-1906.

I would say your button is civilian fashion button. They were popular on men's blazers, etc. The military ones would have had a brass back. Unless, of course, if the back is brass and just looks rusted on my monitor.

No that was the back of the second button

There were no military-issue US Navy COAT-SIZE ironback buttons, because the salty sea air would rust the iron back, making a rust-stain on the uniform's cloth. However, we know for certain that some KEPI-SIZE ironback US Navy (and US Army) buttons existed. It wouldn't matter if the button's back made a rust-stain on the kepi-hat's leather strap. Jflores2628 didn't give us a size measurement for his ironback Navy button, but the photo showing it in the palm of his hand indicates it is the kepi-size version. If that guess is correct, I think he's got an actual US Navy button instead of a civilian Fashion button.

Jflores, please carefully measure the diameter of your navy button, and tell us whether it is smaller or larger than 9/16th-inch.

Thank you for the photo showing your navy-style button laying right next to a US dime's edge. Your button appears to be almost exactly 4/5ths of the .70"/17.9mm diameter of a dime -- which means it is the kepi-size (13mm-14mm)version of US Navy button... not a "Fashion" button. I should mention, in all my decades of closely examining metal buttons, I've never seen a "Fashion" civilian-usage imitation Navy button that's so very small.
