Sorry, all close, but not 100% correct. This is a 1950 Taiwan $1 dollar coin (1 Yuan- taiwan\chinese word for dollar). quite earlier that the dates others have provided. And since Taiwan was established by the defeated Chinese troops in 1949 when they overran the young virgin government that was established in 1946 after the WWII defeat by the U.S.A.! it is quite early in Taiwan's modern history. I had some native Taiwanese review your photos of the coin, and am 100% certain in this assessment. Taiwan was known as Formosa up until we ran the Japanese back to their main islands in 1945, Taiwan is actually the most southerly island in Japan's island chain. In today's world, Japan's acknowledged sovereignty is an island just 40 miles off the coast of Taiwan. The 2 million defeated chinese military that overran the county of Formosa in 1949 have caused political strife ever since, claiming Taiwan is the only real 'China', much to the angst and disgust of the millions of Taiwanese that have existed there for tens of thousands of years on the island. If not for this minority of defeated Chinese mainland vagabonds, they keep Chinese communists entangled with this island nation, and China continues to up their threats of an invasion. Sadly the US government had to keep the little pin head known as Chan-Kai Sheck in power and ruling Taiwan as a military buffer against mainland communists. Because of the billions in US military support and weaponry, China was unable to invade, but we still have all these defeated Chinese runaway clowns running the country. There you have it, Taiwan politics in a nut shell ;-)
