I found this Saturday at an old homesite.I have tried to clean it a little. This coin or token has words on both sides but I can only make out a few letters and the seem to be from another contry. This is A little smaller than a half dollar and thin like a flat button. On one side It has a stamp mark that I think Is Victorian. What do you think. Thanks

bet my money-- that it's a coal company store token * after you stated that other coal company tokens were found there already --- the sc co -- stand for s--------coal company -- store trade token most likely 50 cents in value for mercandise at the store --due to its size being similar to a 50 cent peice most likely thats it value --often tokens were the same general size as "real money"

according to the scrip book anything from viva is highest rarity. any interest in selling it? i have a few others from laurel county. i collect tn, oh, and al mostly but one from viva would be excellent trading material.

there is scrip issued with 1951 date maybe a few years later also ivan. that's good info you've posted.

I looked at my other coal script and I believe know that that is what I have. I think the "S C co" stands for standard coal co. from Viva Ky.I have posted the other script beside my recent script. Thanks guys! :icon_thumright:

maybe earlier verison or or differant type but most likey --I say that you matched it --- S tandard C oal CO mpany - a "company" coal store token and with the other similar tokens found in the area its "fits" in nicely logically -- solved I'd say

the reason I know so much about coal stuff was that my mothers side of the family were all coal miners for several gen -- my grandpa on my moms side worked for the OLGA coal company in War, WV long ago --he was the last of the coal miners in the family --my dads side were all merchant seaman --I choose the sea over the coal pits --easy choice.

All I can make out is " CHAND" and underneath the SC co it looks like it has ..? UNSTART? I wish I could see It more clearer.
It looks like INSTANT.

try "transant" like a in rail road -- coal company's had rail roads that hauled their coal --the RR might have ran the coal company store since they feighted in all the goods normally .

I referring to the very bottom. I dont think TRANSANT will fit. In the middle is ST.

Maybe redeemed for INSTANT MERCHANDISE or something similar. :dontknow:

Some of the advice in my button cleaning post in the "Cleaning and Preservation" section of the forum would help you in cleaning finds like this so that they are legible afterward.

Cool token.

i've been waiting to say this, but after looking through the coal scrip book at all the s....coal co. and not finding anything, and also to say i don't recall seeing a coal token with the script incused.
just doesn't look like scrip. i could very well be wrong and would like to hear about any other letters maybe summarized in one post.
that standard piece you have is awesome!!!

look at other coins he said he found in the area -- "standard coal company" fits the S C co type logo

as in S tandard C oal COmpany .

plus the wording --- merCHANDise is also used on the "other" standard coal company token as well.

can't disagree on all that ivan.
yes, there are unlisted pieces to be found. so i can't say without doubt.
the incused script SC CO just is very different from any i've seen.
this doesn't guarantee one way or the other....

shouldn't the letters under the script be a town name with ",KY"
but again, this is not always the case. like when a maverick token may have something else at the six o'clock position.

i looked through the coal book and found

east bernstadt it is in laurel county
there was a star coal co. there

the token reads:

star coal co./5/merchandise check
it is uniface-meaning blank reverse
no mention of the script letters, but there could be things i don't kow....ha ha! yeah right!!

also, there was a:

bernstadt (laurel county)

the token from there is Litton Coal Co. (incused---interesting that it is incused!)
on the revcerse the denomination then rays all around

there could be others not listed or discovered yet. laurel county has some of the all time best looking tokens.
one has a train engine and a coal car on it. from pittsburgh
another has a cross pick and shovel from pittsburg also

i sure see bernstadt or east bernstadt under the SC Co. ltrs??? anyone else
