Just got back from a former British Island where I got a chance to do a bit of detecting. One spot yielded some interesting relics including this Firmin & Sons 2-piece hollow button with loop back. Unfortunately the button is not intact, but I have most of the pieces. It depicts 8 sets of rays emanating from a number "15" in the center. The button is approx 1" x 1". I am still cleaning it in hot hydrogen peroxide. But this is what I have so far. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Pete! I believe it is either identical or very close to the button you have there in the center! The decoration between the sets of rays looks almost like an elongated telephone handset from the phones we used in the 70's (but of course it's not!). Can you please tell me what personnel wore these buttons and when? If American CW, odd that I would have found it where I did, unless it was Confederate then it might make some sense as this island was used against the Union. Thanks so much for your post!

I see (thanks for Google) that it's a British regiment. And they were sent to this island according to the Wiki article in the mid 1800s!

West Yorkshire Regiment - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It seems this regiment has quite a long history. My button is quite corroded and damaged, but still an incredible find for me! The "15" appears to be on a raised dome. Any idea of the rarity of this button?

Thanks for any info, Erik

1852-1875 seems most likely. This manufacturer is one of the most prolific makers in the UK.

I was considering having this button "repaired" (if that is possible) as I have the other pieces. Can anyone please tell me approximately how rare (or not rare) this button is. I was found on a former British island where according to accounts this regiment was sent. Also, I don't have any books on British military buttons--can anyone recommend any good ones? Thanks for any input.

As Don correctly posted (thanks Don!) the regiment is designated "York, East Riding"....can anyone she some light on how they get these designations? Were they from York, England? What does East Riding mean? Thanks for any info!

15th (York, East Riding) Regiment of Foot Soldiers' documents
Formed in 1685 and designated as the 15th in 1751.The regiment arrived in Halifax on April 15th, 1758 and took part in the siege and capture of Louisburg that June at a strength of 859 . From Louisburg it went to Quebec with Wolfe, It fought in the great battle on the heights of Abraham, and after Wolfe's fall served at the defence of Quebec, and with the force sent against Montreal under General Murray, which completed the conquest of the Canada's. Next, it was at the capture of Martinique, and it the siege and conquest of the Havana in 1762, and was quartered for eleven months in Cuba, thence proceeding to New York, and afterwards back to Canada, where it served many years.
In 1776 the Fifteenth, then at home, went out to Charleston in 1776, and made the American Campaigns of 1776-8 under Howe and Clinton. The first battalion was sent out to North America at the time of the Trent difficulty in 1861. It served there and in Bermuda until 1870, when it returned home.
