I dont regret buying my DFX its the only detector I use now. I bought mine this last fall for $950 brand new and thats a great deal. i say $650 is a great price for a used one if its in good condition. the E-series is coming up on three to four years old now before that the spectrum was Whites poster child. My advice, TAKE IT, its a steal. Just keep in mind that you wont have a warranty, but if you trust the guy youre buying from go for it. If you need to repair anything on it you might not have to pay more than $150.I know that the most expensive thing to repair on it is the display screen which could run you around $180, so even if you need to fix something on it you probably won't spend any more than what you would buy one for brand new.

The price sounds attractive IF the DFX is in good working order. The price would be even more attractive if it comes with accessories like headphones, pinpointer, carrying case, additional coil, extra battery packs, etc.

As far as checking it out I would recommend turning it on and loading a preset program (Coins & Jewelry would be a good one to try) and giving it a whirl. Toss a few coins on the ground and see if it correctly identifies them. Test out the ability of the coil to pinpoint. (My primary coil recently went out. It was unable to identify coins and could no longer pinpoint. Make sure the one you are buying works well.)

The seller should be able to walk you through the boot up and loading programs. Other than that inspect everything for excessive wear and tear or damage. Watch for wear or cracks on the coil. Inspect the wire and plug on the coil. Is the display scratched or dented? Do all the controls work? Does everything feel tight or flimsy? Does the metal detector look well cared for? You get the idea.

Unless there are serious problems I think this would be a good buy. Good luck.
