It's my day off, and since it snowed here AGAIN today, I've resorted to cleaning out a few boxes of junkque. I have a jar of post CW/modern buttons, and would like to get some dates for them. Since I am interested in the Civil War, my knowledge of these buttons is very limited. Any and all info would be appreciated. Breezie

ChipV, thanks for the ID on #1 as a World War I Collar Disk for Infantry. What does the "C" mean? Breezie

I dont know the dates of your US Navy buttons but here are some Navy buttons I found in a pouch in Lemon City near Miami that I believe are CW to compare. The basics are the same. I dont know when the head turned. :dontknow:

I'm assuming we have green checked #1: World War I Infantry Collar Disk/Button from Company G. One down, 4 to go. Thanks, Breezie

BREEZE WHAT ARE YOU DOING? I'm waiting for the snow to melt and the weather to get warmer so I can MD again. ARE YOU DIGGING FOR RELICS, BUYING THEM, PASSED ONTO YOU, WHEN YOU GOT THE BUCKLE WAS THERE ANYTHING ELSE WITH IT? I dug the buckle several months ago before the weather turned cold, and I don't remember anything else being in the same hole. It was dug in an area where I have found both Rev. & CW War items as well as Indian head pennies and buffalo nickels.A BUTTON BY CHANCE?Yes, I have found buttons in the same area, but none of the ones listed in this post.
WAS THE BUCKLE BY ITSELF DUG UP SOMEWHERE OR WAS THERE ANYTHING ELSE WITH ITI don't remember anything else being in the same hole other than the buckle. Thanks, Breezie

Were you in South Carolina when you found the buckle? Were you anywhere near route 77 area when it was dug?

No, I was in North Carolina. ;D Breezie

Breezie The collar disc is WWI and I think the G would be the company designation. The navy buttons are all 1941 or later. The design was changed from the eagle on a horizontal anchor facing it's left, our right, to the eagle facing it's right on May 14, 1941. The eagle button is Span-Am period. They started using that type of eagle around 1878. I'm not sure on that particular Horstmann backmark on the button but from the way the back is made it looks and 1890's.

Thanks V, but I missed something; the 'or' threw me off. You said the Navy buttons(#2,3,4) are all 1941. Then you said the eagle changed from looking to HIS right to HIS left on 5/14/41. All of my Navy eagles are looking to THEIR right, so why wouldn't these buttons be BEFORE 1941? :dontknow: Breezie

Sorry Breezie I had it reversed. I knew what I meant though. I have corrected it and repented of my mistake.

Okay V, I'm REALLY confused now . .lol :laughing7: . . .If buttons #2,3,4, are 1941 or later because the eagle is facing his right, how can button #5 be as you said: The eagle button is Span-Am period. They started using that type of eagle around 1878. when #5 eagle is also facing to his right? :dontknow: Breezie

They only changed the direction of the eagle head on the navy buttons. The general service buttons were left the same.

Major ^5 & THANKS to Chip, BCH & VaYank. Good job fellows! BCH, I appreciate the link to the officer/CPO button, and the comparison. We can put a big fat green check on this one.
