I live on 22 acres north of Camas, Washington. There is a small creek that flows through the property. I thought a good place to do some metal detecting would be along the banks of the creek because I thought the bank could be a dump site. Sure enough I found lots a metal, bottles, broken dishes, broken glass, and broken cast iron toys. The photographs shown a cast iron ice wagon, cast iron locomotive, cast iron oil truck, and most of the "neat" metal collected from the dump site. Shown in the photograph is a bolt cutter patented in 1892, clothes wringer from the late 1880", and a meat chopper patented in 1883. [/ATTACH]View attachment 799214View attachment 799215

Sounds like you had a good time. Nice finds

Scouts out!

Nice find & a nice picture! What kind of camera do you use?

I love digging old dumps. I don't envy you for digging that saw blade, though.

What I try to understand is why some of the items ended on the banks of the creek...were they just lost or were they discarded because people did not have any more use of them. I thought our early pioneers did not throw away anything.....anyway I know in the early days there was no garage service in the area so I guess unwanted items were just tossed out.

I don't know the answer to your question, but you can also add to your question, were the items deposited there from upstream somewhere during high/fast water levels?

No....... the creek originates on the property from a spriing.....the items were actually tossed at the site where items were found.

I used a Cannon Digital Rebel XTi camera. It probably would have been a better picture if the "fines" were placed on a plywood...the "fines" are on the concrete floor...eventually I will place some of them on rock wall at our house.....anyway I enjoyed finding them...I almost felt like Forrest Gump and his box of chocolates....you just don't know what you will find.

Very cool history you dug up there. Now you need a HUGE electrolysis setup to get rid of all that rust. :)

I really have not found many dumps...I know they exist because this is generally what people did before garbage service. You do need to be careful when digging in dumps because of broken glass and sharp metal edges. I assume you mean "envy" rather than "don't envy".

You are certainly correct with the amount of rust on some of the items.....

That's a lot of digging. That large hinge is really neat. Buy that man a cold one!

Would it be possible to get some photos of the bottles you mentioned and down loaf them in the bottles section? Would love to see them. Thanks and happy hunting

There is more things out there......I thought I found everything there is to find until I found what appears to be a 75 mm artillery shell. It was empty. It is also pictured in the photograph.
Nice find.

I can do that but it will only be the bottles that are embossed........
