Natural or man made?

Found this in a small creek in Southern California. It stood out as an unnatural shape. Anyone care to share their opinion?

Is it metallic? Ferrous? I've seen similar pieces of iron detritus scattered around abandoned mines/ghost towns. Old rusted remains of what have you that are pretty much unrecognizable as anything distinctly man made or natural.
 

Sorry, I definitely could have added more info. It's a rock, not sure of what kind. It's not metal, didn't check if it's magnetic. To me, it has the look of being chipped (knapped) along the edges, because it tapers down to a bit of an edge.
The question is more of did it naturally erode to this, or was it some sort of tool?
