This little piece of pottery has me puzzled. It is coiled hand made. Its incised like Santa Clara pottery but it is not a deep black and I do not recognize the symbols, though I am no expert. Seems to have some wear on the bottom. Maceda is the name on it.

Any ideas or thoughts how to get the maker's region and or tribe identified? Or even the symbols? I've googled quite a few images and such with out much luck.

Thanks!

Other than saying that the one symbol looks like a jackrabbit, I really have no clue.
What region was this recovered from?

Looks like Zuni, New Mex, Az, area.

Think stratos is right looks like a piece someone made out in New Mex, Az. I know when I went out there a couple times I seen lot of this type of pottery laying around peoples homes their grandparents or parents normally made them in the early or mid 20th century.

The design and symbols look Navaho, but Navaho pottery is usually thrown, not made from coiled strands. I have also seen similar pottery from the Alabama Coushatta tribe in Texas. Although, that being said, there is a Maceda pottery in Portugal.

Thanks all . I will continue to research. The Navajo often rubbed pine resin to get their finish. This has signs of a glaze that fired imperfectly and dripped. . The arch symbol reminds me of Zuni. And the jackrabbit. The color reminds me of Navajo. The relief or incise aspect of it reminds me of Northern Pueblo. Perhaps it is a melding of two or more styles or it is not Native North American at all. Or at least not any of the usual suspects. I agree it does not seem all that old..but who knows.

Thanks again every one.
Yes..it was acquired at an estate sale in New Mexico.
