I just purchased this land around two years ago, I just bottom plowed a portion and am finding a plethora of artifacts. There is one section, a 10 yard radius, where we've found half a dozen arrow heads, hundreds of flint flakes, multiple hammer stones, and a bunch of pottery shards. I'm in Patrick, South Carolina, in the sandhills. There is literally NO metal in this section of land. I went over it thoroughly on the highest sensitivity of my detector and found absolutely no steel or iron.

Can anyone comment on any of these items? Literally, the only thing I know, is that the arrowheads are made from chert? I don't know where the chert would have come from. I have no idea how to date the pottery, either. I am fairly certain the round stones are "hammer stones" for flintknapping but beyond that, I'm not sure if I'm looking at a bunch of random rocks or if any of them have any significant historical value. My son (7 years old) is freaking out, he has literally found more arrowheads than anyone else. He is now obsessed with native americans and was able to convince me to start learning to flintknap. Flintknapping supplies come in early next week. Any knowledge at all about any of the items I have here would make his day (or week). Thanks in advance!

Sorry it is so dim - Here is some chert?

Lastly, the latest native american enthusiast, my son (with his two arrowheads he found in a 10 minute span).

Anything man-made, and of great age, is, to me, precious...!
I am what they call me, "Shovel Bum", so speak as an archaeologist.
Those stones, look like weights for a net or bolo-throwing, entrapment tool/weapon...,
I doubt they are gaming pieces.
Fragments of this and that, have meaning, when referring to the complete artifact.
And, just holding something so unique, is a privilege...!
Carry on.

Check out... DIY screen shaker stand... Thread by txag. I bumped it to the top.

Yes, here’s a link to my DIY Screen Shaker Stand. Garscale helped with the design and it turned out great. It is very sturdy and gets the job done. I did make one modification after a handful of uses - I swapped out the 30 Lb springs with 18 Lb springs which gives it more shaking action. I documented the build with a PowerPoint file which includes pictures, dimensions, parts, etc. I also built a spreadsheet with parts descriptions and costs. All this in case I ever build another one down the road. Hey, I’m an engineer (retired), I can’t help it! If you would like the files, send me a PM with your email address and I’ll send them to you.

Am an engineer also. If I get the free time to actually do it, mine will be a lot.... different. :laughing7:

Unfortunately I broke my plow a couple hours ago so I'll be welding that back together between this evening and tomorrow.

Hee hee, you bet! Post pictures of it when you build it. Meanwhile, I hope you get the plow fixed and back to plowing. And keep posting your finds!

Found a neat pottery piece.. I've been plowing like crazy but no rain in the forecast. :/

Ok so I had this idea on making a sweet sifter but I can't find the expanded metal cheaper than retail so it's probably not going to happen. As an alternative I was wondering if I could just use the 1/2" screen on the grapple. Plan was to add a steel plate along the front so I could scoop dirt without getting off the tractor. But, the Only way I can get it to sift effectively is to tilt the bucket forward/back. So, if I make it easier to get scoop dirt into it, it won't sift very well. I could mount an engine on the grapple with an imbalanced load but I'd worry about the loader bushings.

Anyway, still waiting for rain. May dabble with sifting some more at some point..

You were wasting your time with the sifter on the bucket. You just can't turn the volume not dig as deep as you need to dig. I have built many power screens and now own the best one ever built.

The very best wire is mcNichols half inch hex punched. Do not use stainless as it too brittle.

The pottery is Woodland period stuff, and dates the site mostly to that period, deeper older type thing...check out woodland pottery from your area for details.from an archeological standpoint, not a significant resource.

My son was at his mom's house looking for arrowheads and came across this... is this chert?

[Edit] This was found about half a mile from my hill.

It's been like 2 weeks and we havent even had .25" of rain. I've done so much plowing.. losing my patience. Son found this in the original patch earlier today. Flat on one side, very raised on the opposite side. Definitely looks man-made, I just don't know what it is..

Looks like a scraper similar to these
it’s pretty rough but you can definitely see some removals on the front

Thanks, that looks very similar. How would this be used? Used on what? I know my son will ask.

I've got to find a better way to take pictures that show the profile better.. Just looking back at my pics I wouldn't think this was the same piece.

That's a good example why EVERY stone needs to be looked at closely when you are in an area of concentrated occupation.

I think it may have been wrapped or used in conjunction with a piece of leather to make it comfortable in the hands when doing repetitive scraping.

Preparing hides for tanning?

I would suggest that item #1 is a Halfted End-Scraper. That is an intact NA artifact. And, it’s a beauty! The others are either broken bits of tools or debitage.

Want to get more rain before we start walking through the middle of everything, got this one walking along the edge earlier.
