National Park Service laying in wait for relic hunters

Frame, sell, trade, donate, scrap, etc. As long as items were discovered and recovered legally it's nobody's business what the finder does with them. Part of the problem is that some feel like they need to have their nose and personal ideas in everyone else's affairs. As long as it's legal, live and let live and this hobby would be much better off for everyone. :icon_thumleft:

Our goernment has to justify their existance to stay employed but if they had a real job that required an actaual profit to be made to stay in business they wouldn't have the time running around like a bunch of jackazzes on power trips screwing with people the people that make their pay checks cashable. Of course we need some regulation in MD'ing and relic hunting in parks, etc. but cmon let's get real most MD'er's are very considerate people that pick up way more trash than anyone else except maybe for park employees that dump the cans!

of course as always --one must know where one is detecting especially when one is near "hallowed ground" (ie) historical battlefields and graveyard areas * and of course unless its publically owned land that's ok to detect at -- one must get the proper land owners ok first --we do not trespass and taking things from peoples land without their ok is stealing point blank , yes you need to do it the "right way" legally speaking --because doing it the "wrong way" will just cause even more land to become off limits and give other folks a "very bad image" of MDers.

that said -- the land should be clearly "posted" to avoid any possible "mistakes" but if its marked and you violate , you pay the price.--

Thats the NPS for ya. I know they watch the delaware water gap in PA for rock hunters. Makes more sense for up here to let a plow destroy whats there instead of being saved.

Any one that expects logical, common sense approaches to anything connected to government is doomed to disappointment in my opinion.

Don't get me wrong! I love the National Park Service properties. Enjoy hiking and taking the kids there too enjoy the battlefields. I DO NOT like there archaeologist at all and I am glad a bunch of them got laid off over the past couple months due too budget cuts.. They take the relics off the land and keep them in vaults and will not let the public see them. I have wrote numerous complaints too the government about this and finally they are starting too lay them off... They hate all MDers. But again I really enjoy the National Park Service.

And don't forget the trail-cams being employed to monitor land more and more. What's next-Drones?
When I first got into MD'ing, I took it to a public riverfront beach, no sooner took it out of my car and a ranger pulled up, practically threw me up against his truck and made me empty my (empty) pockets to show I didn't find anything. Got the message
that they don't mess around or tolerate MD at all.

I wonder how many relics they quietly slipped in their pockets for their own collections? Just saying. I know they wouldn't do that.
OH NO They would never do that , RIGHT ,people will always be people & temptation sometimes & will turn the the most honest people to the [dark side ] be it archaeologist's ,Police, and esp, those Politician's from Mayor's all the way to the top in DC. As spoken by many Crime bosses to Drug lords " Everyone has their price".

In '79, (I was a cop) I had a parttime job installing Burg and fire alarms. I did an archie's home along the bluffs above Lake Michigan (Milwaukee area). In his attic were BOXES of indian arrowheads and stuff.... I don't think he collected them himself! TTC

I thought this was cute today. So they cleared off this half an acre piece of woods in Fredericksburg today right next to the Fredericksburg National Cemetery and right next too the road, I think they are going too make another parking lot right there. They have 1 posted sign warning it is national park ground, however it was torn down and flipped upside down! the Park service marks property after clearing by placing white tape all around but DO NOT use Posted signs. So I pulled in across from the battlefield @ 8pm and shut my truck off cause I saw a guy in a black car just laying in wait for something! so my buddy got out of the truck and ran over too the spot and was just looking around like a tourist and when he did that the guy in the black car got out, ran on top of the hill, and started too look down @ the spot with binoculars and some radio looking device (I think it is a device that can pick up a MDer that I know the Park Service uses)! Undercover park ranger it was or appeared too be or maybe some creep?, they were laying in wait too nab a MDer who would be stupid enough too pull to the side of the road and hunt it real quick thinking it may just be a cleared off spot for a construction site and not knowing it was actually National Park Land. I pulled up right next too the guys car and started waving :hello: too him on top of the hill! He looked so DUMB founded it was funny. I kept waving for him too come down and talk but he just stood there looking @ us like he wanted too charge at us but he would not come down. Either a real creepy dude or undercover park ranger.

Please be careful out there MDers if you are hunting ANYWHERE near a National Park ALWAYSSS make sure you know the boundary lines and DO NOT GET LOST in the woods and end up on park land. I am going too file a complaint with National Park Service tomorrow in Washington D.C. on what I saw tonight cause I do not think that is right for them too not properly post the site and having 1 Posted sign that was torn down and flipped upside down kinda like entrapment.

Years ago I spoke with a archaeologist from the Park Service and told him I was a MDer and he told me "OH so you use those devil sticks (meaning MDer) and loot the ground" ever since then I lost faith in them. OH I also know the Park Law Enforcement Rangers is got list of local MDers in the area and try and keep up with where they are digging at and what kind of collection they have, etc. They are still on the hunt for several buckles that were supposedly dug on park land and the last guy they caught on park land got 2 years in prison after finding a C.S.A. buckle. You can read it here:

Some things never change. Many years ago, I got permission to hunt a farm that joined Antietam. It was across the creek from the park. The farmer told me not to go in the creek. I hunted that field all day and found more than a 2# coffee can full of balls and bullets, even smaller pistol balls. All the time I was hunting there were 2 rangers watching from across the creek. They didn't even wave back! lol Frank...

If my history memory serves me, the Antietam battle (I think the first day) had the one day highest deaths of the Civil War. TTC

I feel so relieved that the feds are going to have my health records and give ADDITIONAL powers to the IRS.Yup...the future looks bright.I wonder when the archies and park service heads get themselves into a situation where they,"cant remember"...or my personal favorite,"I learned about it on the news"

When do we say"ENOUGH"I am saying it now.Buncha folks on the public dole working hard to limit the publics access and freedoms.Truly sad.The midterm elections are going to be a major wake up call I predict....yup...quote me.

Amazing........now how did public property become that of the few........when did public servants become the enemy.......
Sad, from what I have seen here, about everybody is well meaning and trying to do what is right..........so why treat us like enemy?
Something is wrong.......very wrong today in this country......

Back in the late 80's I was running a hotel in Hollywood and had provided a suite to the DEA so they could do surveillance on a place across the street. One night will chatting and killing time we were talking about how this was likely his last hurrah as he had his time in and was retiring. I made some comment that as young as he was, if he still enjoyed it and was good at it, why retire. He said he was just too dismayed with it all. He said it's too hard to tell the good guys from the bad and went on to say, that he couldn't count the times they made a bust and would open the trunk of a car and it would be filled level with bundles of $100 bills and he had to watch as each of the guys took one. He said it got so bad in later years that as soon as the trunk was opened and he saw the cash.....he'd turn and walk away. He said he did it so he wouldn't be lying if he was ever questioned about missing cash.
