Found this today swinging the AT PRO. I believe it's some type of name tag but from what.

It has rivets and says:

SHEPPARD KNAPP JR
32 W 56 ST
N.Y.

Sheppard Knapp had a carpet company in

NYC in the late 1800's till 1926.

He died in 1906. The above address is a home address. Sheppard Knapp Jr must be his son there is a listing on the internet of him at that address.

What could that tag be used for?

If that is dried leather, it could be a luggage tag. Here is his obituary that was in the NY TIMES, November 7, 1901:

Obituary 1 -- No Title - View Article - NYTimes.com

Did they name him after a ship??? USS Shepherd Knapp (1861) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Interesting find :)
Breezie

Hi Breezie, Thanks for reply. Interesting about the ship but I noticed Mr. Knapp's first name is spelled Sheppard and the ship's spelling is Shepherd with an "h" instead of two "dd". The obit is interesting I'll see if I can find more information on addresses.

I will inspect material and see if I can figure out if it's leather.

Very neat find :icon_thumleft: I searched the New York City directories and found that Knapp family at that address from about 1884-1900. In the 1901 directory they are listed at the 88 Riverside Ave address noted in the obit Breezie found.

You may have come across this photo already -- but I thought it was interesting to see the former owner of that tag included in this family photo. I think they had a vacation home in Little Silver, New Jersey.

Great research Bramble! They must have been wealthy people. I wonder if any of the descendants are alive now?

From what I can see, they were very wealthy indeed. Sheppard Sr. ran a large furniture and carpet business as well as other ventures. Looks like Sheppard Jr. was in a partner in the firm and also dabbled in horse breeding.

Maybe the tag is from some horse equipment?

What size is this tag? You can see in the pic that Sheppard is smoking a pipe. Could this be from his pipe case?

Wow, you are all amazing with your help. First thing I thought about was some kind of tag off horseback equipment.

I will still try to search for more information I would like to know if there's any descendants around the area. I wouldn't mind giving the tag to them.

That photo is pretty amazing more opinions welcome..

I still have to closely examine the material riveted to see if its leather or something else with a higher power magnifying glass I will let you all know

After some thought I find it unlikely that a man would have his name and address put on horse equipment. Monogram, yes. Name & address, probably not.

This came off an item that might be left somewhere or more easily lost - like luggage or a brief case or a pipe or eyeglasses case.

to me it looks as though it may be from a carpet sample.perhaps a carpet bag.A simple guess
cheers
