Interesting sources. I went there sometime between 1989 and 1991, after completing three research trips to Natl Archives and Lib of Congress. I wanted to be a tourist but I walked into a large loft containing an identified, rotted hulk of a vessel which was captured from the Confederacy during the Civil War, then renamed. What they did not know, before the CW, that vessel served as a mail boat between Charleston, St. Augustine and Tampa Bay. Furthermore, because its port was St. Augustine, it was used to transport the US Army into several coastal fort locations, such as Ft. Dallas on Miami River and Ft. Brooke on Tampa Bay--also, to a few other posts. This occured during the Third Campaign against the Seminole Indians in Florida, under the direction of Sec. of War, Jefferson Davis (1854-58). I notified Mystic of its extended history on two occasions but received a lackluster response other than a request for my sources--which, I sent to them. Somewhere in my files is a photo of that vessel remains. To this day I wonder if it was restored or sent to the dumps. Back then, they were not making any plans to save it from further decay due to its advanced condition.
