✅ SOLVED mystery wood and brass tool

I hope you guys will indulge me as this is not something I found with my detector but was in an auction lot that I got.

It's two wooden sticks that fit together tongue-in-groove. Each is faintly marked in inches. One end on each has a brass fitting with a sharp little pin sticking out. Together they fit into the other piece shown, which has two brass strips on one side of it.

There are no marking other than JB POPE stamped on it in a few places, which I'm pretty sure was the name of the original owner.

It reminds me of a part of a tool that is used on a drafting table.
