mystery stone in ring.......... SOLVED!

A few years ago I found this ancient ring. It is sterling, but the stone is what amazes me, I have never seen anything like it, nor has anyone else I have shown it to. It is semi transparent, and the black thing on the front of the stone shows up in the same place on the backside. There is no color of black going through the stone, it's almost like a mirror image. I sure hope all y'all I.D. 'ers in here can help me...... Not ge

Okay, Now that we agree that it is moss agate, what era do you all think the ring style is from and is moss agate rare?

Moss agate is not rare. Ring is a cast. Looks to be hand engraved decoration on the sides, would put it at from 1900 through the 1930s by style, though it could have been made at any time. Still a nice find.

I think - more specifically - Montana Moss Agate, google it for pics of other examples like yours... very nice ring!

Montana Moss Agate rings were very popular in the 1940s and 1950s. They were most commonly set in silver settings. You could buy a very nice ring for a dollar or so. Roadside gas stations, curio shops, diners, tourist traps, etc, all sold these rings. Agate rings are still sold at places targeting tourists throughout the West.
