Mystery spoon ring...

I found this ring a couple of months ago and didn't think too much about it. A couple of days ago I made my first post on the site and a few questions arose. Where would you get a silver dime in 1969? I originally thought someone broke it from a proof set. Then I found out you couldnt get a proof set in silver at the time. It is a 1969 D as you can see from the pics.
Any ideas on how to figure out if it is silver would be appreciated. It sounds like silver when you drop it, I know that doesnt help a lot but... It has no copper showing on the edge. The way you see it is the way I found it. Only cleaned it a little with soap and water. Around here regular dimes always turn reddish in color if they have been in the ground a while. Found this about 5"down.
Thanks for any input.

Hi Finn, I really cant tell you much about the silver content of your ring. But you can get it tested for silver content. What I did want to tell you is in your tittle you called it a spoon ring and that, it is not. The way you form a ring with a spoon will not give you writing on both sides of the band. When done with a spoon the outside will not have any writing and the inside will have a center ridge with writing on both sides of the ridge. Take a look at the ring in this link and you will see what i am talking about.
Coin Ring Technique

However it is a very nice coin ring. HH

I think it's 1960 - not 69

cool find though!

I have been trying to find information on it since I saw your post. The only thing that I can come up with is either someone used a very very valuable error coin to make the ring or it was minted on a nickel blank instead of a clad blank. Which would still make it a error coin. The only thing I have not found is what material were the 1969 proofs made from.

Will a magnet stick to it. Please try it and let us know your findings. If so it is nickel.

Hi, that's not a "spoon ring". Spoon rings are acutally made from a spoon. What you have is a coin ring. Surf the net. There's some cool videos on how to make one. Maybe Youtube.

I think I have your answer as to why the coin is silver. I think what you have is a 1960 dime that looks like it says 1969.
Look closer.

It's truly a dime ring. First pic says dime on the inside. I've never seen one let alone heard of one. Cool find.

Fix
I looked up spoon ring and I see what you mean. I was thinking he meant it was made by hitting it with a spoon. Never too old to learn something new.

Sorry Wolf. I didn't see you'd already said it's a 1960. I think you're right. I was proud of myself too. 8-)

Very cool ring, I'd love to find one of those, I just made a ring like that out of a clad quarter.

Added.a better pic of the year. It is not a 1960...

Checked that thread. It was on a planchet of pure nickel. Thank you though and HH

That's a very nice ring! I'm no help on the quandary going on here, but I can add that the mintmark is positioned above the date which began in 1968...seems to settle the question of whether it's a 1960 or '69 ring.

Well I stopped at a jeweler and he looked at it for a while and figured out it had been plated after it was made.
Thanks for all the replies.
Happy Holidays and Hunting!

cool ring however...........................HH

The dime is 1960. The machine that made the ring is responsible for the scuff that looks like a tail on a "9."
