Mystery nugget!

I was digging near where an old outhouse used to be, and among other things, I found this:



At first I thought it was a small metal pouch, but it seems solid. I didn't squeeze really hard. It has odd markings on it and a distinct BB-sized divot. It's definitely some kind of metal as it was making my detector go nuts. Any ideas? I know it's not much to go on..

Is it too fragile to clean? Perhaps we could see it better if it were cleaner. Welcome to the forum. Breezie

I already cleaned it with a toothbrush and some water, but I don't want to scrub too hard.. I'll update later if I can get it cleaner.

OK, some better pics. it really can't get much cleaner. Not sure how else to describe it... on one end there are lose maleable pieces, as if that end broke or was cut. the other end is well-formed. My thought is that it has molten into this shape, whatever the metal is. the markings/striations and the divot are what intrigues me the most, but this may just be an unsolved mystery. On to the pics! Make sure you click on them more than once (about 3 times) for high detail.

Can you see shape of an animal such as a hogge? {pig}? Anything like roman numerals ie L or C? letters like SI? Have it tested for the kind of Metal as I find these all the time and wonder myself. HH Boris

Maybe it was a thorium gas mantle? That would explain the wild signal on your machine...
