✅ SOLVED Mystery item

I also dug this item today which looks like it is the top of something that broke off. I was thinking the top of a bell, perhaps? Any other guesses? Found in suburban Chicago near a preserve which was first settled in the early 1830s.

You got it! I cleaned it up a little more and got all the mud out and it is indeed a whistle (can't believe I didn't realize that right away!) . It even still works a little but you can see it was bent a little and maybe that's why the original owner tossed it. I'll have to research it to estimate how old it is.
