Found this in my neighbor's yard. Under high magnification, it appears to say "ONE DIME." I can see the "ON" on the 1st line and an "IM" on the line below it and the font & placement exactly matches that of a later seated dime or barber dime (see sample font below). The other side is totally void of any indicators.
However, here are the puzzling facts: It is razor thin, the size of a quarter, and has a clangy sound when dropped on a hard surface. Though it's so thin and clangy, it's strong--I can't bend it at all. It had a VDI of 62-63 but dimes are usually around 81-82. Needless to say I'm stumped.
Do I have a very flattened dime or ? Thanks.

Sure it isn't a flattened dime? I found a buffalo nickle near RR tracks that was flattened but still had enough detail to indicate what it was.

That's my guess too. A flattened dime. I'm doing some Photoshop forensics on it now.

Here's some overlay forensics for you to ponder... I skewed everything as best as I could, trying to match like patterns.

Is it an optical illusion or just me, but the item in the colored photo looks like a square.

I too can make out the words " One ime". My guess is that you have found a dime that has at one time or another been run over
By a train,Or beatenFlat with something. But it is or was a Dime at one time or another!....Cool find ....HH

P.S. It does look like a square in the color picture.....Things that make you go Hmmmmm..............................:icon_scratch:

It certainly looks square in that pic, I agree. Below is another shot, but not sure it helps much. You can see from the pic below that it is slightly concave and that, coupled with it being jagged, may make it deceptively look square at any profile angle. Thanks for all the feedback. A flattened dime--that's a 1st for me.
