My wife and I went out today to an old church from the late 1800’s. The land was donated to the church in 1878. My wife made out very well and I found a lot of beer tabs.🤣
She found a broad axe head from around the 1840’s and a chain I believe from a horse drawn wagon. I think it was from the wagon tree. The chain was found near the site of an old log cabin slave house. I think she did an awesome job today! FullSizeRender.jpeg

Old stuff!!! Congrats!!!

Great looking axe, cleaned up you might find a maker's mark.

Those Garrett Aces are a great detector for finding rusty iron. I have found several broad axes with an Ace 250. Broad axes clean up very well with electrolysis. Great find.
Yeah, they really seem to like old iron. They go nuts on iron, gold and silver. We got the 400’s and they seem to find things others miss.

Very cool, congrats! Please repost that axe once it's been cleaned up.
The only way I have to clean it up is with a 4” grinder with a cup wire brush or a 4” pipeliner wire brush.

Do not take a wire brush to it. If there is a makers mark on it you will scour it off. Some people soak rusty iron in cider vinegar, but it takes weeks to clean. Electrolysis is simple and quicker. There are tons of videos on how to set up an electrolysis tank.

Don't do that, it will be a reminder years later.
Why did I do that?
Apple cider vinegar, or some other rust remover for soaking.
It's laid in the soil for 100-200 yrs waiting to be found, what's a few more weeks.
Keep us posted.

I went to YouTube and saw how easy an electrolysis tank is to set up and I think I have everything needed to do it. I’m going to see about getting it done when I have time to. I’m a maintenance man at an apartment complex so things get crazy around here sometimes. I live on-site and we don’t like it one bit and are looking to buy our own home in the near future.

I made a smaller one this year. It takes a while, but works great. Good luck 🍀

NO!!! Use electrolysis, it won't damage it and will make it look as good as it's going to get.

I’ll probably make a small one since I don’t have anything to make the tank out of. I’ll probably use a cheap tub of some kind from Wally World.

I’m going to use electrolysis to clean it. Will it clean the area where the handle was? I’d think so but thought I’d ask.

Here is what I’m using; an ice cream bucket as a container. I use a very large iron nail as the sacrificial metal. I use 3 TBS of Arm & Hammer washing soda mixed per 1/2 gallon of tap water. The little plug-in DC transformer is my power source. I just checked, and my 12VDC unit is actually giving almost 15VDC. It varies. I tried an automotive battery charger initially. It was a smart charger and could sense that the resistance was wrong. It didn’t work for me. Check YouTube there are many channels of good info. Good luck🍀 follow all safety recommendations
