Its an aluminum rod (I believe its aluminum anyways,) about 2 feet long, with a barrel shaped attachment on the end. The rod part is 2 feet long or so, and the barrel is about as big as a quarter on the end, and about 2.5 inches, with the middle flared out in the classic barrel shape. the over all shape is sort of a exaggerated T shape, with the top being the barrel and the middle section the rod.
The rod itself is polished, and has a screw end, like a bolt, so it can be screwed into something. It also have a section right above the screw end that is knurled, and the knurled part is slightly larger in diameter than the rest of the rod. The rod has a diameter of about 1.3 millimeters (sorry, I don't know what that is in standard, just realized I have a micrometer sitting beside me.)
The barrel is stamped "5" on one end, and when I shake it, it sounds like it has a liquid inside, like water, or mercury. I'm going with mercury because the end is fairly heaving, and so far, no matter how I shake it, no water comes out.
It almost looks like a homemade shifter for something, but its way well to made to be something homemade, unless whoever made it has a serious machine shop.
I found it in an old power house, that had been converted into a garage for an airplane, with one half of the building being old power tools (old drillpress, etc) and the other half the garage/maintenance area. I've had it for about 2 years now, have never seen anything like it, and the fact that its not marked anywhere but the "5" on the end of the barrel doesn't make it any easier. Please, my curiosity is killing me. Anyone have any ideas?

Sorry about the bad image, the camera is broke and this is the only one that came out even halfway decent. At least its a close up of the top, you can kinda get an idea of the scale off it. The coins pictured are a Washington Quarter and a 1 Euro coin, for our European friends out there.

I'm kinda stuck with the cleaning rod replies but with all I have the "threaded" end wouldn't be on the first section ...but here's hoping some knowledgable black powder people will jump in. Could it be the rod for a ball puller. See picture of ends, they look like they might work with a rod like that and maybe the liquid helps start it. A dead blow like in Bio's reply. The "5" might be for 50 Caliber. Ok a whole bunch of maybes and if,s. Oh, a Ball Puller is used if you get a lead ball stuck in the barrel of your muzzle loader to extract it.

That's a bit of overkill for a ball puller. I just thread a double ended screw (one side threaded to fit the rammer and the other a wood screw) on the same wood rammer with metal tip that fits under the barrel. If you got 'em down with a push you can get 'em out with a pull.

Not to say that's not a possibility. Most everything I use in muzzleloading was around 250 years ago. Lots of new fangled "patented", "Improved" and "RACICAL!" muzzleloading crap on the market now that has passed me by. I'm in it for the challenge and LACK of technology. ;)

That's me in the middle

One thing you need to realize Tavis, is that I am sure there are hammers and bell ringers out there that may have never been used, and therefore don't bear any use marks. I have no idea what it is, but by posting in this thread, you implore our help, and I wouldn't be so quick to shoot down our suggestions. Just some constructive criticism...

How about Plunger Handle for a pump or Grease Gun.

Tony

And for crying out loud! Don't disagree with me.

Ok, I'll hazard another guess, I haven't been able to find an exact match, BUT, have you given any though to it being a stabilizer for a compound bow? I'd take it to an archery supply and see if they can ID it, and if it threads into the stabilizer mount on a bow, then just maybe you have it solved.

I think you might have it Ken. I looked through more than 300 archery stabilizers on eBay and couldn't find an exact match either but all the features, (material, lengths, connection,) were there. here's a picture of the closest I could come. You got my vote.

But he has the item in his hand. We only have half a picture. If you dont think it fits, Tavis, dont be afraid to state your opinion. ...just my opinion.

I have a question. Does that barrel end unscrew from the rod?

It looks like it should, theres seam at the point where the rod and barrel fit together, but I can't get it apart to save my life.

Tavis, any chance that the material is stainless steel?

Found some Bone Tapping Mallets with the following description.

Designed to have a shock-absorbing force, providing less bounce or wasted force. The Mallet is filled with a shock-absorbing media and has a flat striking surface to keep the Mallet centered on an instrument. The handle is manufactured of copolymer. The bottom can also be used to tap an implant in place.

Damn, not sure how I feel about the possibility of the thing being for surgery like that. I guess its possible its stainless, I always figured it was aluminum. The rod has some corrosion on it, but I can't tell if its aluminum or stainless. One thing though, the barrel end isn't in line with the shaft, maybe there was a handle on the other end, and a nurse would hold it while the doctor did whatever?
Hmm, this idea is pretty interesting, it would def. explain why its filled with something. Also, upon further examination of the barrel, it seems to be stainless steel of some sort, maybe surgical stainless.

:icon_shaking2: Magnets don't stick to most stainless.
Charlie is right. I call the rusty "stainless" steel that a magnet will stick to "Japanese Stainless." Good stainless will not attract a magnet and will not rust. Anodized Aluminum may appear to be stainless.

I was asking earlier if the barrel part unscrews, maybe water got inside, but he cant open it. Hate to be redundant, but wish we had a complete picture.

It couldnt hurt to try the magnet to see if its chrome or nickel plated steel, but it looks to me to be anodized aluminum.

Is it possible it could be a "shop" class project?....Never took "shop" in school. but some friends did...one made a hammer that looked similar to this thing...his was pretty useless as a hammer but it looked pretty.. :D

IMO, I don't think it's a hammer. The striking surface is indented, so it would get sharp edges if you pounded with it. I think it is a handle of some sort. Stick shift or throttle. Just a guess. :dontknow:

How about a dent puller for doing body work.Put a screw in the end ,screw into body panel and pull, out comes the dent. ???Just an idea. HB
