My son Carson and I got out last night for an after dinner hunt . We hunted one of our old stand by schools . He was really hoping for gold , and WOW did he find GOLD :headbang:! I was digging up one of the four rings I found when I look up and he is walking over and saying , DAD I HAVE GOLD ! I went over to the hole and couldn't believe what I saw , GOLD ! It looks to be a women's broach and tested 14K . It has a huge amethyst stone and all of the stones around it are missing . He hasn't stopped looking at it  . Then I found a small silver ring and two more junk rings , bringing my ring total to #51 - #54 . Then as we were getting ready to leave Carson got a nice +78 at 3 inches , silver ring :headbang: . It was one great hunt for sure !

So I'm presuming maybe 18k, :icon_scratch: That was a common grade for the time period. The piece appears to be maybe Victorian, late 1800's or early 1900's :dontknow: Maybe more modern its hard to tell, that stone is likely worth more than the gold though that's a huge well cut Amethyst !!

Really great find !! :headbang:

Keep @ it and HH !! :hello2:

I meant it passed 14k not 18 or 22K . It's 14K
Glen

I really can't believe that it is not 22k or at least close unless the coloring in the pics is way off! If the coloring is not off, then the Gold has either been enhanced with additional compositions (possibly additional Copper along with Palladium or Rhodium added) or your' test acid has degraded and needs to be replaced. I would recommend taking it to a well and trusted Jewelry Store or Gold Dealer to have it tested again.

Frank

My acid test kit is in great shape . I have tested 22k and it works . Same with my 18K acid . When I saw it I thought 22k also and was very surprised that it was only 14K .

that brooch is fantastic. odd that it's missing all the accent stones

Holy Shiny-Stuff Bat.....errrr Pl8man!:tongue3: May I borrow Carson? I need some lessons! I bet you're still smiling! He didn't say " Hey Mom, I beat Dad", did he? You've obviously taught him well, so congrats are in order for you just as well as he.:icon_thumright:

Thanks old dude ! He has really become great at find silver & gold . He been hunting with me since he was 8 and now he is 14 and using my old Whites M6 . He starts High school next year so I'm guessing he might be into other things soon like girls and sports . :laughing7:

Ya know, he WILL get into girls. Teach him the fine art of passing his found rings off as expensive gifts! His dance card will be full!

Congrats.on the great.finds!
Ya gotta love that gold.

Oh my word. That has to be pretty valuable. Nice pay off for something you love doing. Your son is going to feel very RICH! Happy Memorial Day!

That brooch is SO cool! Love the stone, keep it up guys :)

I agree that if you can find the exact hole it was in that sifting would be worthwhile. The stones may have come out when it was stepped on and pushed into the dirt.

Good for your son! That will hook him to MD'ing.

Sweet Big Gold Carson Congrats:headbang:

Wow! Carson did really well finding gold and silver Glen!
You're really lucky to have your son as a detecting partner, this is something you guys will always have!
Congrats to Carson! :hello2:

His gold brooch find looks similar to one I found in May ... except mines made of brass! :crybaby2:

Hi pl8man good to see that you are still doing great out there! Just getting back into detecting out here again. And a big congrats to Carson on that broach, so far all the ones I've found have been fall apart and paste stones, think I might have found a single good one back when metal detecting was still young tho =)

I know you're proud of Carson, but the time you two spend together is worth more than that lovely find. That is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. Congratulations.
