What a great hunt today with pl8man! First field was a bust. We moved on to another field. :icon_pirat: I never expected to pull this coin out of the ground here. At about 7 inches deep I got flashes of +92 on my MXT. Dug down and probed around but no sound. Immediatly checked the dirt I scooped out. Saw it was in a dirt clod that landed on the grass, so it didnt get scratched (I hope). It was such a rush when I saw the edge of the coin peeking out. I knew I had silver coin, but what? Waited for pl8man to run over with his camera, popped out the coin and he told me it was a Moragan Dollar right away. The year appears to be 1885. Its the oldest coin I have ever found, and the first U.S. silver in the 1800's too. I am not sure how I should clean the dirt off of it, if anyone has any suggestions, holler. I will probably never find one of these again. What a find! :headbang: I also found a gold plated pendant, the back says 14k EDP or somethin like that. The plating on the front looks great compared to the back. Rings are at #9 now. This will be a weekend to remember. Thanks for checking out my post. :icon_thumleft:

Nice! I bet your heart is still racing!

Great Find

I would suggest the following options to clean the Morgan:

1) Soak in water and some soap followed by soak in Acetone (I would not put lemon juice or any acid on the coin) This would be the least invasive.
2) ---Typically how I clean silver--- Use a sonicator, if you know someone who has one. A little soap on the coin and submerge it. The sonication will shake it clean and get dirt off w/o scratching. Then soak in acetone.
3) If there is stuff that will not come off, and is not tarnish, I sometimes apply invisible tape. Gently rub the tape (not the coin surface) with a q-tip or even lightly with a tooth pick to get the tape stuck in the crevices of the coin. Then pull the tape off and repeat. (takes several times). Then soak in Acetone to get any adhesive residue off. This should not scratch the surface of the coin if you do it right. But if you do this, do it after you've already done option 1 or option 2 and you absolutely can't get stuff off -- I've used this for tar, clay, and even cement residue. (This method is however somewhat invasive to the coin)

I would keep anything with acid or abrasives away from that coin even though it probably is already environmentally damaged.

Awesome finds! I've been hunting a year and a half and still have not found a silver dollar!

It might be interesting to look into the history of this particular field and see what type of past it had. Perhaps there's more where that came from! :read2: :coffee2:

Nice haul - sweet coin- congrats
