Had 2 hours this morning, decided to hit the site where I have found LC's, 3 cent nickels and a slick copper. Faint wheat penny signal. ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1511542684.822713.webpImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1511542708.806633.webp
Thought, "cool a token", size of a LC but a little thinner, but could tell it has some design under the crud

Rubbed some dirt off on my glove and saw US, googled Old Large Cents, found no matches. Sent pic to Steve of PA, he said it looks like a Nova Constellatio, no way! A little more rubbing and 1783, ok stopped rubbing.

Can anyone confirm if this is a Nova and type? I think I need to tooth pick some more crud off, seems like it has a lot of detail under the dirt.

Dried, then flaked with wooden skewer pics:

(Thanks for looking!)

Good luck out there!

Awesome find and deserving a Banner vote! One more vote headed your way! Good luck!

Congrats on digging that amazing coin. :occasion14: That one remains on many bucket lists.

Thx Loco! I did not even know to put this one on my bucket list until I went through the journey of learning about this cool coin. That's exactly what I love about this hobby, you never know what's going to pop out next!

Amazing History of that coin. You now have in your possession the earliest coin minted by the U.S. GOV., minted for all 13 colonies..... This article gives you a nice history on the coin... https://www.pcgs.com/news/1783-nova-constellatio-pattern-coins
That is a totally different coin. The one in the article is a rare pattern coin minted in the US. The dug coin was minted in England and shipped to the US in bulk. During this period a lot of lightweight copper tokens of different designs were shipped to the US from private minters in England. While an interesting piece of early American numismatics, the only connection to the rare pattern coin is that the minter based the design of the coins on the pattern coin. The circulating coins were not authorized by the US in any way.

My banner vote is in, congrats on a incredible find!

Whoa ho! Congrats on the Banner buddy - first one of 2018. I’m glad to see Novas getting some attention as historic coinage, and yours in a fine example. Happy 2018!
